For a QR code on paper or another screen, use your phone’s camera or built-in QR scanner. For a code already in a photo, screenshot, PDF, or on the same screen, use an image or screen-recognition feature instead: on Android, Google Photos with Lens is the clearest documented route for a saved image, while Circle to Search can handle on-screen codes on supported devices. iPhone and iPad Live Text may help with an image, but Apple does not promise that it will decode every QR code.
First, choose a method based on where the QR code appears
A camera scanner reads a code it can see through the camera. It does not automatically decode a screenshot or PDF stored on that same phone. For those, use a feature that can inspect the image or current screen—or show the code on another device and scan it.
- Printed code or code on another screen: use Camera or a built-in QR scanner.
- Saved photo or screenshot: use Google Photos and Google Lens on Android; try Live Text on iPhone or iPad, with the limitation explained below.
- Code on the current Android screen: try Circle to Search if your device supports it.
- Computer PDF or unsupported phone: open the document on a phone with a supported method, or display it on one device and scan it with another.
Scan a code on paper or another screen
1. Use the iPhone or iPad Camera
- Open the Camera app.
- Point the device at the QR code and hold it steady so the whole code is visible.
- Tap the link or notification that appears.
Apple documents this method for iPhone and iPad. It works when the camera can see the code, such as on paper or a separate display. Apple’s instructions for scanning QR codes.
2. Use Code Scanner in iPhone or iPad Control Center
- Open Control Center.
- Tap Scan Code and point the camera at the QR code.
- Tap the result to open it.
If Scan Code is missing, add it from the Control Center gallery. This is useful when you want to launch the scanner directly rather than opening Camera. Apple documents the feature for iPhone and iPad in its QR code scanning instructions.

3. Use the Android camera
Open the camera and point it at a QR code on paper or another display. When a scan suggestion appears, tap it to follow the result. On Pixel phones, Google says camera scan suggestions need to be enabled for this workflow. See Google Pixel Camera Help.
4. Use Android’s Quick Settings QR scanner
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap the QR scanner tile. If it is not visible, look through the additional tiles or add it if your phone offers that option.
- Point the camera at the code and follow the result.

5. Scan with a second phone or tablet
If the code is displayed on your phone but that phone has no suitable image-reading feature, open the code on a second device and scan it with the other device’s Camera or QR scanner. This is a practical workaround, not a special same-screen feature. Keep the code large enough and fully visible to the scanning camera.
Read a QR code already in an image or on your screen
6. Open a saved image with Google Photos and Lens
- Open Google Photos and select the photo or screenshot containing the QR code.
- Tap More.
- Tap Google Lens and choose the offered action if Lens recognizes the code.

7. Try Live Text on iPhone or iPad
Open the image in Photos or another supported view and look for text detection or an action such as opening a website. Apple says Live Text can recognize text in photos and online images and provide actions, but its guidance does not specifically guarantee decoding QR codes in every saved image. Treat this as an option to try, not a sure method. If no QR-related action appears, use a second device’s camera. Live Text availability can vary by language and region; see Apple’s Live Text guidance.
8. Use Circle to Search on a supported Android device
- Display the QR code on your screen—for example, in a PDF, email, photo, app, or video.
- Long-press the Home button or navigation control to start Circle to Search.
- Circle the QR code and follow the result shown.
Google describes Circle to Search as a way to scan QR codes without using the camera, including codes in the listed on-screen content. It is available only on select Android devices, so the gesture and feature may not be present on your phone. See Google’s Circle to Search guidance.

9. Open the PDF or image on a second device
For a QR code in a computer PDF, or when your phone cannot inspect its own screen, display the page on a computer, tablet, or another phone and scan it with a separate phone’s Camera or built-in scanner. The sources cited here do not establish one universal desktop QR-decoding method, so this avoids relying on an unverified website or tool.

Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping the entire code in frame, holding the phone steady, improving the light, avoiding shadows or glare, cleaning the lens, and moving closer while keeping the full square visible. Check the destination before opening it
A QR scan may present a website link. Check the destination shown by your device before tapping it. Do not upload a confidential PDF, screenshot, or document to an unfamiliar online decoder unless you have checked how that service handles and retains files; no web decoder is endorsed here.
