For lithium-ion phones, you do not need to drain the battery before charging, and plugging in does not automatically use a full charge cycle. Overnight charging is generally managed by modern phones, but temperature, charger compatibility and battery condition still matter. Here are six common battery myths—and what the guidance actually says.
1. You must drain your battery completely before charging
Myth: A phone battery needs to reach 0% before you recharge it.
Fact: Lithium-ion phone batteries do not need regular full discharges. Apple says there is no need to discharge an iPhone battery completely before recharging it, and Battery University explains that lithium-ion batteries do not have the “memory” problem associated with some older battery chemistries. You can charge your phone when it suits you; a full discharge is not a maintenance requirement. Apple’s lithium-ion battery overview and Battery University’s battery-life guidance explain the distinction.
2. Every time you plug in, you use up a whole charge cycle
Myth: Connecting the charger once equals one battery cycle.

Fact: A cycle represents cumulative use equal to 100% of the battery’s capacity, not one charging session. Apple’s example: use 75% of the capacity one day, recharge, then use 25% later, and the total adds up to one cycle. Short top-ups therefore do not each count as a complete cycle. The exact cycle-life expectations vary by product; Apple’s general explanation does not specify one universal cycle count. Apple explains cycle counting and battery aging here.
3. Is it unsafe to charge my phone overnight?
Myth: A modern phone left plugged in overnight necessarily overcharges.
Fact: For iPhone, charging stops when the battery is full and resumes if the charge level falls below 95%. Optimized Battery Charging can also reduce the time the phone spends fully charged. Apple says overnight charging is safe for iPhone. That is device-specific guidance, not a guarantee about every phone or battery. Apple’s iPhone charging guidance describes its controls.
Energy Research Institute @ NTU Singapore likewise says overnight charging is generally okay when the battery-management system is sound, while noting the risks of faulty batteries, heat and incompatible chargers. Assistant Professor Christopher Lee, quoted by NTU, said: “But generally, it’s okay to charge your devices overnight, added Asst Prof Lee, provided the BMS of the battery is not inferior, faulty or tempered with, as can be the case of batteries from dubious origins.” Read the NTU Energy Research Institute article. 4. Charging to 100% will immediately ruin the battery
Myth: Reaching a full charge causes immediate battery damage.
Fact: The cited guidance does not support the claim that a single charge to 100% immediately ruins a phone battery. Apple describes managed charging and offers Optimized Battery Charging to reduce time spent fully charged. Batteries do chemically age and gradually lose capacity, but an optional practice intended to manage aging should not be mistaken for a universal safety rule. Use your phone maker’s battery settings if you want to manage charging behavior. Apple’s charging guidance describes iPhone’s feature.
5. Any fast charger or high-wattage adapter will damage a phone
Myth: A higher-wattage adapter is automatically harmful.
Fact: Wattage alone does not establish whether a charger is suitable. Compatibility with the phone and its charging system matters. Apple says iPhone charging is faster up to about 80%, then slows; software may also limit charging when temperatures are elevated. Battery University advises using a charger suited to the battery’s chemistry and voltage and notes that charging rate has limits. The available guidance does not establish that every higher-wattage charger damages every phone.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Heat and cold do not matter while the phone is charging
Myth: Temperature is irrelevant as long as the charger is connected.
Fact: Temperature can affect battery lifespan. Apple says iPhone ambient temperatures above 35°C can permanently reduce battery lifespan and identifies 16–22°C as the ideal ambient range. Those figures are Apple’s guidance for iPhone; they should not be applied as universal limits for other brands. Battery chemistry and device design differ, so follow the manufacturer’s directions for your model. Apple’s guidance on maximizing iPhone battery performance explains its temperature recommendations.
What to do when battery capacity has declined
Battery capacity falls as a lithium-ion battery ages. Apple says its batteries are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity for a high number of cycles, with the result varying by product; its general explainer does not give one cycle count for every device. Battery University reports a Cadex test of eleven 1500mAh phone pouch packs: initial measured capacity was 88–94%, falling to 73–84% after 250 full-discharge cycles. That is a specific small sample, not a lifespan forecast for all phones. See Battery University’s account of the test and its limits.
