If search in the Windows 11 Start menu or File Explorer is slow or incomplete, check what Windows Search is indexing before rebuilding its catalog. Confirm indexing has finished and that the folders you need are included; then run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter. Rebuild the index only if those checks do not resolve the problem.
Windows Search uses an index—a catalog of file names, locations, properties and, in supported cases, file contents—to find matching items. Search can be slow or miss results while that catalog is being created, paused, missing a location or rebuilding. These steps start with the least disruptive checks because a rebuild itself requires Windows to index your files again.
1. Check whether indexing is still underway
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows and check the indexing status. Microsoft Support says an initial indexing run can take “up to a couple hours to complete.” That is an upper expectation, not a guarantee that every PC will finish within that time. Once the initial work is done, Windows updates the index in the background as data changes. Microsoft explains how Windows Search indexing works.
If indexing is still underway, give it time before resetting the catalog. When practical, leave the PC powered on and idle so indexing can continue.

2. Check whether the folder you need is included
Windows Search can only return indexed results from locations covered by its current settings. In Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, check whether indexing is set to Classic or Enhanced.
- Classic indexes common user locations by default. If a folder you need is outside those locations, choose Customize search locations and add it.
- Enhanced indexes the PC’s user folders and files, covering a broader set of locations.
Adding a folder or changing coverage may require Windows to index more data, so results may not appear immediately.

3. Choose Classic or Enhanced based on the coverage you need
Use Classic with customized locations if you want to limit indexing to common locations and specific folders. Choose Enhanced if you need Windows to search across all user folders and files on the PC. Microsoft notes that Enhanced covers more locations and can use more system resources; it does not promise a particular search-speed improvement on an individual device. See Microsoft’s descriptions of the indexing modes.
4. Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
If the folders are included and indexing does not appear to be the issue, run Microsoft’s Search and Indexing troubleshooter. The route documented by Microsoft is:

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Search.
- Under Related settings, select Advanced indexing options.
- In the Indexing Options window, select Advanced.
- Choose Troubleshoot search and indexing, then follow the wizard.
Note the troubleshooter’s findings before changing other settings. The labels or their locations may vary between Windows releases. Microsoft documents the troubleshooter route.
5. If only Outlook search is affected, troubleshoot Outlook separately
If Start and File Explorer search work but Outlook misses recent messages, the issue may be specific to Outlook rather than a general Windows Search problem. Some local Outlook data relies on the Windows index. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Outlook notice described a narrow historical issue affecting certain POP, IMAP and offline Exchange configurations; Microsoft marked it fixed in a 2022 update. It is not evidence of a current, general Windows 11 search defect. Read Microsoft’s Outlook issue notice.

6. Rebuild the index if the earlier checks do not help
Rebuilding restarts indexing, so the catalog needs time to refill and search results may be incomplete while that work is in progress. Use it as a later step for persistent slow or incomplete results, not as an instant fix.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Under Related settings, select Advanced indexing options.
- In the Indexing Options window, select Advanced.
- Under Troubleshooting, select Rebuild and confirm if prompted.
Allow indexing to run again after the rebuild. Microsoft’s rebuild guidance explains that repopulating the catalog takes time.

When these fixes do not explain the slowdown
Indexing settings do not account for every slow-search symptom. A problem limited to a network location, cloud placeholder, or broader PC performance may need a different diagnosis; the steps above do not establish those as the cause. Avoid jumping from a slow search box to resetting or reinstalling Windows, which are broader recovery actions. Microsoft’s recovery guidance recommends troubleshooting before using more disruptive recovery options.
