The message “This app can’t run on your PC” does not identify the cause. First work out which app or installer triggered it, whether other apps still open, and what action brings up the message. Then use the appropriate branch below: update or troubleshoot a single app, address an install or update failure, or identify an unknown app that keeps launching.

These 17 checks are conditional diagnostic steps, not 17 guaranteed fixes. Start with the app’s publisher and Microsoft’s built-in tools; avoid security bypasses, registry edits, or Windows reinstallation based on this message alone.

Choose the right troubleshooting path

What is happening? Start here
One known app will not open Check the app’s supported Windows version, then update it or try Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Microsoft explains that apps can become incompatible because of changes to Windows architecture, security features, or system requirements. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance.
An app will not install, uninstall, or update Use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter if the problem is with a desktop program’s setup or removal. It is not a general fix for every app that fails to launch. Microsoft’s install and uninstall guidance.
The message appears, but you do not know which app caused it Record what you were doing and when it appeared; look for the app or action that launched at that time before changing settings. Microsoft Q&A discussions illustrate that the triggering app is not always obvious, but do not establish one universal cause. Microsoft Q&A.

17 checks and solutions, in a safe order

Identify what failed

  1. Write down the app and version. Note the exact name shown in the dialog or installer. Distinguish opening an installed app from running its installer, and from opening a document that should be handled by an app.
  2. Check whether unrelated apps still launch. If other apps work, focus first on the failing app rather than treating the message as proof of a system-wide fault. Microsoft Q&A guidance asks whether the issue affects a particular app or others too. See Microsoft Q&A.
  3. Record the trigger and timing. Note the action immediately before the dialog appears, its time, and any recent app or Windows changes. If no app is apparent, these details can help connect the message to a startup action or a specific link or widget.

Check the app and its installer

  1. Check the publisher’s Windows requirements. For a non-Store app, use the publisher’s support information to confirm that the app version supports your Windows version. Microsoft advises checking with the publisher for non-Store programs. Microsoft Support: app compatibility.
  2. Check Microsoft Store for an app update. If it is a Store app, open Microsoft Store and check for available updates. Microsoft recommends updating an app when a newer version is available. Microsoft Support: app compatibility.
  3. Get non-Store updates from the publisher. Download the current installer or update only from the software publisher’s official site. Do not rely on an unknown download site to provide a compatible or trustworthy executable.
  4. Confirm the download matches your Windows system type. Check that the installer is intended for your Windows version and system type, such as 32-bit or 64-bit. A Microsoft Q&A response suggests checking system type; it is community guidance, not a confirmed diagnosis for every occurrence of this message. Microsoft Q&A.

Use compatibility and setup tools only for the problem they address

  1. Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter if the app has no update. On Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, and follow the prompts. Microsoft’s current guidance also covers Windows 11, whose Settings path differs. Microsoft Support: compatibility troubleshooter.
  2. Test a compatibility setting only if it is offered and appropriate. Follow the troubleshooter’s recommendation for the app. Compatibility mode may help a particular older program, but it is not a guaranteed fix; undo a setting if it creates new problems.
  3. Use Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for setup failures. If the error occurs while installing, removing, or updating a desktop program, try Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. Microsoft describes it as addressing certain issues that block programs from being installed or removed, including problems with installation data; it is not the first choice for an ordinary launch failure.
  4. Check the publisher’s notes if an app stopped working. If the program worked before, look for a recent app update, known compatibility issue, or publisher support note before changing Windows-wide settings.

Trace an unclear or conditional trigger

  1. Test the exact link or widget that triggers the message. If it appears after clicking a browser link or widget action, note what app or extension that action is meant to invoke. One Q&A report described obsolete browser extensions, but that individual experience does not establish extensions as a general cause. Microsoft Q&A.
  2. Investigate startup launches if the app is unknown. If the dialog recurs without an obvious action, review startup apps or scheduled launches as a way to identify what may be opening at that time. This is investigation, not a guaranteed tracing method or diagnosis.
  3. Try administrator launch only when there is a reason. Use Run as administrator only if the publisher instructs you to or the failure clearly involves access permissions. A community answer suggests this as a possible check, not a universal remedy; it does not resolve an architecture mismatch. Microsoft Q&A.

Avoid risky or disproportionate fixes

  1. Do not turn off security controls to run an unknown file. Do not disable antivirus, SmartScreen, or Windows security protections just to force an executable to open. Verify the file and publisher, and obtain a supported version through an official source instead.
  2. Contact the publisher if a setup troubleshooter does not resolve setup. For a failure specifically involving installation, removal, or updating, use the app publisher’s support channel if Microsoft’s troubleshooter does not help. Its scope is limited to certain setup and removal problems. Microsoft Support.
  3. Check compatibility after an operating-system change before making major repairs. Consult the publisher’s supported Windows versions and Microsoft’s compatibility guidance. The message alone does not justify a Windows reinstall, registry edit, or buying another PC. Microsoft Support: compatibility guidance.

Windows 10 support status is a separate issue

Microsoft says Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides ordinary technical assistance, feature updates, or security fixes for Windows 10. Microsoft also says the PC continues to function and describes consumer Extended Security Updates protection through October 12, 2027. These dates concern support and security, not the cause of a particular app error. For current options, consult Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support guidance and consumer ESU information.
