One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo permanently delete photos from Android, choose the method that matches where the photo is stored: empty Google Photos Trash to remove items from the Photos library, use Free up space on this device to remove backed-up local copies while keeping the cloud library, or factory-reset the phone before handing it over. These actions have different scopes. None proves that every backup, shared copy, removable card, or forensic remnant is gone.
First, identify which copy you want to delete
A photo may exist in more than one place: in your phone’s internal storage, in a Google Photos account, on an SD card, in a backup, or in a shared album or conversation. Deleting one copy does not necessarily remove the others.
- Remove it from Google Photos: delete it in the app or on the web, then empty Trash if you want to skip the normal recovery period.
- Free phone storage but keep the backed-up photo: use Google Photos’ Free up space feature after confirming the backup is complete.
- Prepare the phone for transfer or disposal: factory-reset it, and handle removable storage and cloud or shared copies separately.
Before an irreversible action, check the Google account shown in Photos and verify any copies you want to keep. Google Photos deletion can affect the cloud library and synced devices, while Free up space is specifically for backed-up device copies.
1. Permanently delete photos from Google Photos
In Google Photos, delete the selected photos or videos, then open Collections > Trash and choose the option to empty Trash. App labels can vary by version; follow the Trash controls shown in your current app. You can also delete items using Google Photos Help: Delete photos & videos.

Google says deleted photos and videos remain in Trash for 30 days before automatic permanent deletion. Emptying Trash removes them sooner. Google’s statement is specific to restoration through Google Photos: “Photos and videos that you permanently deleted can’t be restored.” It is not a guarantee that every copy outside Photos has been erased.
Deleting from Photos may also affect devices using the app with backup enabled, albums, and some shared contexts. Check the account and any shared or separately backed-up copies before emptying Trash.

2. Remove backed-up photos from the phone but keep them in Google Photos
If your goal is to reclaim phone storage, do not delete the photos from the Photos library. Instead, confirm that backup has finished, then in Google Photos use your profile picture or initial and select Free up space on this device. Google documents this Android feature at Free up space on your device – Android.
This action deletes device copies that Google Photos has backed up. The backed-up items remain viewable in Google Photos and at photos.google.com. Photos younger than 30 days may remain on the device. Google emphasizes: “Important: This feature deletes photos from your device.” After removal, your phone’s built-in Gallery may no longer show the local copy; viewing the cloud copy may require signing in and, in some cases, an internet connection.

3. Factory-reset the phone before transferring or disposing of it
A factory reset is the built-in option for clearing device data as part of preparing a phone for a new owner. The exact menu path depends on the manufacturer and Android version, so use the instructions for your specific phone. Android’s general guidance is at How to Factory Reset Your Phone and System Settings.
- Check that you have saved anything you want to keep and that you know which Google account and backups contain your photos.
- Review your manufacturer’s reset instructions and start the factory reset from the phone’s Settings. The reset removes registered Google accounts and device data.
- Check removable storage separately. Android warns that an SD card may not be erased in some cases; remove it and handle it according to whether you intend to reuse or dispose of it.
- Separately delete any Google Photos cloud copies or shared copies you do not want to retain. A phone reset does not erase those.
Android’s platform guidance gives useful context: Android 11 compatibility requirements specify that a factory reset must delete userdata in a way that meets relevant standards such as NIST SP 800-88. AOSP security guidance describes secure erase, trim, or sanitize where supported, with other approaches as fallbacks. These are platform requirements and implementation guidance, not a guarantee for every individual phone or external card.

What “no recovery possible” can—and cannot—mean
Emptying Google Photos Trash ends the supported Photos recovery path, and a factory reset is intended to clear the phone’s user data. Neither action establishes that no copy exists anywhere or that no forensic technique could ever recover data from a specific device. Results depend on the device, storage configuration, backups, and whether a copy was shared or stored elsewhere.
Android storage security also varies by device and generation. AOSP says file-based encryption (FBE) is supported from Android 7.0, and devices launching with Android 10 or later are required to use it. Older launch generations may use full-disk encryption, and configurations differ. Encryption helps protect stored data from unauthorized access, but pressing delete alone does not prove that remnants on a particular storage device are unrecoverable. See the AOSP guidance on File-based encryption and Full-disk encryption.

SD cards need particular care. Adopted storage is formatted and encrypted for one device, with its keys stored on that device; portable storage has different security properties. Behavior depends on Android version and configuration, so do not assume the phone reset covered a removable card. AOSP explains the distinction in Adoptable storage.
Quick Recap
Which method fits your goal?
| Method | What it targets | Recovery or copy considerations | Backup impact |
