To set up FTP in Dreamweaver, first define your local site, then add the server details supplied by your hosting provider or server administrator under Site > Manage Sites. You need remote-server access plus the correct host address, username, password, protocol, port, and remote folder; these values vary by server.
Before you configure the connection
Dreamweaver’s publishing-server setup assumes you have already defined a local site and have access to a remote web server. If you do not have server access, ask your hosting provider or administrator for it. Get the server address, credentials, required protocol, port, and remote folder from them rather than guessing.
Adobe’s Dreamweaver publishing-server setup guide, last updated September 25, 2023, documents FTP and secure alternatives. The exact options and values available to you depend on the server configuration.
How do I set up an FTP connection in Dreamweaver?
- Open your site settings. Choose Site > Manage Sites, then create a site or select your existing site and edit it. In the Site Setup dialog, choose Servers.
- Add a server. Add a new server or edit an existing one. Enter an internal name to identify the server in Dreamweaver.
- Choose FTP and enter the host. Set Connect Using to FTP. Enter the FTP address supplied by your host, without a protocol prefix.
- Enter your login and port. Fill in the username and password provided by the host or administrator. Adobe documents port 21 as the default for FTP; use another port if your server administrator specifies one.
- Set the remote folder. Enter the Root Directory containing the publicly visible site documents. The folder is specific to your server. If you do not know it, ask your administrator or leave the field blank. Names such as
public_htmlorwwware examples that may appear on some servers, not universal paths. - Enter the Web URL. Supply the site URL. Dreamweaver uses this setting for site-root-relative links and link checking.
- Test and save. Click Test to check the FTP address and credentials. If a firewall requires passive mode, expand More Options and select Use Passive FTP; ask the administrator if you are unsure. Save the settings, then set the server’s role to remote in the Servers category.
What FTP details do I need?

Should I use FTP, SFTP, or FTPS?
Use the method supported and required by your server. Adobe lists FTP as a typical method and also supports SFTP and FTPS, among other connection types. If the host requires a secure connection, confirm which secure protocol it runs; FTP, SFTP, and FTPS are not interchangeable server settings.

- FTP: Adobe documents port 21 as the default. Whether passive mode or a proxy is needed depends on the network and server.
- SFTP: Adobe describes SFTP as encrypted and documents port 22 as its default. The server must have SFTP running. Authentication may use a username and password or a private key; Adobe’s instructions support OpenSSH key files.
- FTPS: FTPS uses FTP over SSL/TLS. Adobe documents explicit or implicit encryption choices and certificate-related authentication options; the server’s configuration determines which settings work.
For a secure method, ask the administrator which protocol, port, authentication method, and firewall requirements apply to your account before changing the connection type in Dreamweaver.
How do I upload files after setting up FTP?
Use the Files panel to connect to the remote host and transfer files. Adobe’s guide to managing and transferring files in Dreamweaver describes the remote connection and transfer controls.

- Open the Files panel and use its remote-host control to connect to the server you configured.
- To upload local files, use the panel’s Put control. To retrieve files from the server, use Get.
Fix common connection and upload problems
- Connection test fails: Recheck the host address, port, credentials, and protocol against the values from your host or administrator. Confirm that the server supports the selected method.
- FTP is blocked or times out: Ask whether passive FTP or a proxy is required. Adobe notes that proxy servers and multilevel firewalls can interfere with Dreamweaver FTP connections.
- You cannot find the site folder: Verify the Root Directory with the administrator. A directory name that works for another host or account may not be correct for yours.
- A transfer fails: Inspect Dreamweaver’s FTP log for details. Adobe notes that a “cannot put file” error can mean the remote folder is out of space.
- SFTP authentication or connection fails: Confirm that SFTP is enabled on the server and, if using a key, that it is a supported OpenSSH key file.
