Bluetooth dropouts usually come down to a weak or obstructed connection, wireless interference, low accessory power, a pairing or device glitch, or—on Windows—a driver, service, or power-management issue. Those causes can look alike, so check the connection systematically rather than assuming one fix applies to every device.
First, narrow down what is disconnecting
Notice whether every Bluetooth accessory disconnects or just one, and whether the problem happens only with audio or with other connections too. Then compare what happens nearby versus farther away, and in a quiet wireless area versus a crowded one. These checks help identify a useful troubleshooting path; none proves a single cause on its own.
- One accessory: Check its charge, pairing state, and behavior with another compatible source device if available.
- Several accessories: Look more closely at the computer or phone, its Bluetooth settings, and nearby wireless conditions.
- Audio only: Compare streamed audio with audio stored on the source device, as described below.
1. Distance or physical obstacles weaken the link
Bluetooth can become unreliable when devices are too far apart or separated by walls, floors, or other obstacles. Apple recommends moving connected devices closer together and removing obstructions where possible. Try using the accessory near its source device, with a clear path between them, and see whether dropouts become less frequent. This is a diagnostic check, not a guarantee that distance is the cause. Apple’s guidance on wireless interference, distance, and obstructions explains these factors.
2. Other wireless activity is interfering
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi both use the 2.4 GHz band, so nearby wireless activity can contribute to interference. Apple also identifies potential sources such as microwaves, cables, and wireless speakers. If dropouts happen in one location more than another, test away from busy wireless equipment and reduce nearby obstructions. On a computer, check whether USB 3 devices or hubs are close to its wireless devices; Microsoft includes this among its Bluetooth troubleshooting checks. Apple’s interference guidance notes that moving supported Wi-Fi devices to 5 GHz can also help reduce 2.4 GHz congestion; this is an option to test, not a universal remedy.

3. The accessory is low on power
A low battery or unstable power state can interrupt a connection. Microsoft advises checking that the Bluetooth accessory is charged or has fresh batteries. Power the accessory off and back on, then check its charge using the method specified for that product. If you are troubleshooting a Windows computer, also inspect its energy-saving settings: Microsoft recommends checking Energy Saver or Battery Saver and, where available, the Bluetooth adapter’s power-management setting. The exact setting and whether it appears depend on the Windows device and adapter. See Microsoft’s connection troubleshooting steps and its Windows disconnection guidance.
4. Pairing or a temporary device problem is interrupting the connection
A device may be paired but not currently connected, or its Bluetooth state may need a reset. Google recommends toggling Bluetooth, confirming that the devices are paired and connected, and restarting them. Apple advises forgetting and re-pairing headphones if they continue disconnecting.

- Turn Bluetooth off and back on on the source device, then confirm that the accessory shows as connected.
- Turn the accessory off and on, and restart the source device if the connection still drops.
- If the issue is with headphones and persists, forget or unpair them, restart the source device, and pair them again.
For Android, menu names and steps vary by manufacturer and version. If basic checks do not help, Google’s Android Bluetooth guidance directs users to the device manufacturer. For Apple headphones, see Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for wireless audio that cuts out or sounds distorted.
5. Windows has a driver, service, or adapter problem
If Bluetooth drops on a Windows PC—especially with more than one accessory—check the computer’s Bluetooth software and service as well as the connection itself. Microsoft identifies outdated or incompatible drivers as a common source of Bluetooth connection problems and recommends updating the driver. Its Windows disconnection steps also include restarting Bluetooth Support Service and using the current Bluetooth troubleshooter. Some Device Manager power-management options are not available on every adapter.

- Open Settings and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. The precise route can differ between Windows versions; follow the Bluetooth troubleshooting option presented by your Windows 10 or Windows 11 system.
- Restart Bluetooth Support Service using Microsoft’s Windows-specific instructions.
- Check Windows Update or the PC or adapter manufacturer’s support instructions for an appropriate Bluetooth driver update.
- In Device Manager, inspect the Bluetooth adapter’s power-management options if that tab is available; do not assume every adapter exposes it.
Use Microsoft’s instructions for Bluetooth disconnecting in Windows and general Windows Bluetooth problems. These Windows-specific checks should not be treated as fixes for Android or Apple devices.
If Bluetooth audio alone cuts out
Move the source device close to the headphones or speaker, then play audio stored locally instead of streaming. Apple recommends this comparison. If local audio stays stable but streaming does not, investigate the streaming or network context as well as the Bluetooth connection; the result does not by itself identify which one is at fault. Apple’s wireless-headphone audio guidance includes this test.

When to get device-specific help
If the accessory still disconnects after the relevant checks, consult support for the source device or accessory. On Android, Google specifically points users to the device manufacturer when its basic steps do not resolve the problem. On Windows, use the PC or Bluetooth-adapter maker’s driver instructions where an update is needed. The right next step depends on which device is dropping the connection and its software and hardware.
