Which Linux distro is best for your MacBook depends first on its processor. For native Linux on Apple silicon, start with Fedora Asahi Remix or Ubuntu Asahi and check support for your exact Mac. For an Intel MacBook, consider an x86_64 distribution—but treat that as a starting point, not proof that its Wi-Fi, graphics, trackpad, or sleep will work. If you want to keep macOS intact, run a Linux virtual machine and choose an image built for your Mac’s architecture.
Can you install Linux on a MacBook?
Yes, but “MacBook” covers two different hardware families with different Linux paths. Intel Macs can use x86_64 (also called AMD64) Linux images, subject to model-specific hardware compatibility. Native Linux on Apple silicon relies on the Asahi project and its support for the exact Mac model. A third option is a virtual machine (VM), which runs Linux inside macOS rather than replacing it.
Before choosing a distro, open Apple menu > About This Mac. If the overview says Chip, your Mac has Apple silicon; if it says Processor, it has an Intel processor. Model year alone can be ambiguous, so use the chip or processor listing to choose a path.
| MacBook and goal | Start with | What that does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Apple silicon, native Linux | Fedora Asahi Remix or Ubuntu Asahi | These are Asahi-based routes. Support depends on the exact machine and does not guarantee that every component or feature works. |
| Intel, native Linux | An x86_64 candidate such as Ubuntu, Fedora Workstation, Zorin OS, elementary OS, or Arch Linux | The image architecture is appropriate for Intel, but compatibility with an individual MacBook still needs checking. |
| Apple silicon, Linux in a VM | An ARM64/aarch64 image; Debian, Fedora, and Ubuntu are examples | Linux runs virtually, not as a native installation. Check that the VM software supports your chosen guest image. |
| Intel, Linux in a VM | An AMD64/x86_64 image; Debian, Fedora, and Ubuntu are examples | The guest architecture matches Intel. VM performance and access to Mac hardware differ from a native installation. |
Which Linux distro is best for an Apple silicon MacBook?
For native installation, the strongest supported starting points here are Fedora Asahi Remix and Ubuntu Asahi. Both are Asahi-based; neither should be treated as a blanket compatibility promise for every M-series MacBook.

Fedora Asahi Remix
Asahi’s Fedora information lists M1 and M2 series MacBooks as supported. Confirm that your exact model appears in current device guidance before proceeding. That listing does not establish support for every later Apple chip or guarantee that every hardware feature is complete.
Ubuntu Asahi
Ubuntu Asahi is a community port, not an Ubuntu installation supported by Canonical. Its project aims to follow Asahi hardware support, but releases may trail the reference project. Check the project’s current guidance for your specific Mac before installing.

Should you use a standard ARM64 Linux image natively?
Do not assume that a generic ARM64 image is a substitute for an Asahi-based native install. On Apple silicon, ARM64 images are a VM option; native support depends on the Asahi work and the exact device. If you want a conventional Linux environment without replacing macOS, use an ARM64/aarch64 guest image in a compatible VM.
Which Linux distros are candidates for an Intel MacBook?
The distributions below offer or document x86_64/AMD64 installation media, making them architecture candidates for Intel Macs. That does not confirm compatibility with a particular MacBook’s Wi-Fi, graphics acceleration, trackpad, webcam, keyboard, suspend, or firmware. Check reports and installation guidance for the exact model before committing to an install.

Ubuntu
Ubuntu is an Intel candidate with x86_64 installation media. Its desktop image can be tried without permanently changing the computer. Ubuntu’s try-it guidance calls for a USB flash drive of 8 GB or larger. A live session can help you assess basic hardware, but it does not prove that every feature will work after installation.
Fedora Workstation
Fedora Workstation offers an x86_64 image for Intel hardware. Choose it only after checking the relevant MacBook model’s component support; the availability of an Intel-compatible image is not a Mac-specific compatibility certification.

Zorin OS
Zorin OS provides x86_64 media, so it is an option to investigate for an Intel MacBook. Confirm that the exact model’s essential components work before replacing macOS or relying on the machine for daily use.
elementary OS
elementary OS offers Intel/AMD installation media. As with other Intel candidates, that identifies a suitable general processor architecture, not guaranteed support for an individual MacBook’s hardware.

Arch Linux
Arch Linux provides x86_64 downloads and is another Intel architecture candidate. Verify model-specific hardware support and be comfortable with the distribution’s installation and maintenance approach before choosing it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Linux distros should you use in a MacBook virtual machine?
A VM lets you run Linux without making it the Mac’s native operating system. Match the guest image to the Mac’s processor: use ARM64/aarch64 on Apple silicon and AMD64/x86_64 on Intel. Debian, Fedora, and Ubuntu are examples of distributions available for VM use; selecting the right architecture matters more than choosing a distro from a generic “Mac compatible” list.
- Apple silicon: choose an ARM64/aarch64 guest image.
- Intel: choose an AMD64/x86_64 guest image.
- Either type: check the VM software’s supported guest operating systems and understand that virtual hardware and performance are not the same as a native installation.
How to choose—and install—without risking your data
- Identify the processor: open Apple menu > About This Mac and look for Chip or Processor.
- Choose native or virtual: for native Apple silicon Linux, investigate the Asahi route for your exact model; for an Intel native install, verify the MacBook’s components against the distro you are considering. Choose a VM if you want to keep macOS as the host.
- Check essential hardware: look for model-specific information about Wi-Fi, graphics acceleration, suspend, trackpad, webcam, keyboard, and any other feature you rely on. Architecture support alone cannot answer those questions.
- Try before replacing: Ubuntu’s desktop try-it option uses a USB flash drive of 8 GB or larger and is intended to let you try the image without permanent changes. A live session is a useful check, not a complete compatibility guarantee.
- Back up before a permanent installation: preserve your files and make sure you have a recovery plan before changing partitions or removing macOS. Asahi’s Apple silicon installer is macOS-based, so do not assume that its installation path requires a USB stick.
Why this is not a trustworthy list of 15 ready-to-install distros
A list of 15 names can imply that each distro is equally ready for every MacBook. That is not established: the native Apple silicon options identified here are Fedora Asahi Remix and Ubuntu Asahi, and the Intel distributions listed above are architecture candidates rather than model-verified installations. Debian, Fedora, and Ubuntu are also VM choices, not extra native compatibility claims. The useful shortlist is therefore the one that matches your processor, installation method, and exact MacBook—not an inflated count.
