What settings should I change on my LG TV? Start by checking the options that can affect brightness, picture mode, automatic Filmmaker Mode, and motion processing—but don’t assume every setting needs changing. The right choice depends on your TV model, webOS version, room, content, and preferences. LG says picture results vary with the TV’s capabilities and viewing conditions, including room lighting and screen reflectance.

This checklist separates four changes you can evaluate using current LG guidance from six areas to inspect only if your model offers them and its manual explains them. Use the settings you actually need; the number ten is a review checklist, not a prescription to alter every option.

What settings should I change on my LG TV?

Begin with brightness and picture mode, then decide whether automatic Filmmaker Mode and motion processing suit the content you watch. For the other six checklist areas below, first confirm that the option exists on your model and understand what it changes. LG warns that picture controls and results vary by TV and viewing conditions.

1. Energy Saving Step

If the picture looks too dark, check whether energy saving is limiting brightness. LG’s July 28, 2026 troubleshooting guidance recommends setting Energy Saving Step to Off as a diagnostic step. That may make the image brighter, but it also means you are choosing brightness over that energy-saving limit; it is not a universal instruction to disable power-saving features.

LG lists these menu paths, which vary by webOS generation:

  • webOS 26 and later: Settings → All Settings → System → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off.
  • webOS 22 and later: Settings → All Settings → General → Energy Saving.
  • 2021 webOS 6.0: Settings → All Settings → Support → Energy Saving.
  • 2020 and earlier: Settings → All Settings → Picture → Energy Saving.

LG notes that Eco or Auto Power Save picture modes may also contribute to a dim image. If turning off Energy Saving Step does not resolve it, check the picture mode and LG’s other troubleshooting possibilities, including loose connections or hardware issues. Menu labels can differ by model; see LG’s dark- or dim-picture troubleshooting guide.

2. Picture mode

Pick a preset that fits the room and what you are watching rather than treating one mode as best everywhere. LG’s support guide offers these examples: Vivid for natural light, Standard for artificial light, and Cinema for a dark room. They are examples, not independent calibration results or guarantees that a mode will look the same on every LG TV. A bright preset such as Vivid can help in a bright room, but it is not automatically the most accurate choice.

Room lighting and reflections from the screen affect what you see. Compare modes in the room and with the content you actually watch. If you are troubleshooting a dim picture, LG also suggests trying Standard or Vivid; choose based on whether the result is useful, not simply because it is brighter. LG’s examples and cautions are in its picture-settings guide.

3. Filmmaker Mode Auto Start

Filmmaker Mode Auto Start automatically switches the picture mode to Filmmaker Mode when applicable. Try it if you prefer a filmmaker-oriented presentation, then compare familiar programs with your usual preset. It is a preference setting, not a requirement for every show or a guarantee that every program will look better.

Look for Filmmaker Mode Auto Start in the picture settings; the exact menu path and availability can vary by model and webOS version. LG describes the option in its picture-settings guide.

4. Motion processing (TruMotion)

There is no evidence-based universal rule to turn motion processing off. Motion settings can change how films, sports, and games appear, and viewers differ on whether they prefer less processing or smoother movement. Compare the available settings using familiar content, especially a film, and keep the lowest level of processing that looks right to you.

As a model-specific example—not a recommendation for every LG TV—What Hi-Fi’s October 5, 2026 review of the 48-inch LG C6 used Cinematic Movement with Filmmaker Mode to address judder in 24fps material. The review described Cinema Home as a punchier option that sacrifices some accuracy. Your TV may offer different labels or results; see the LG C6 review.

Six more settings to inspect on your specific model

The available evidence does not establish that the following six options exist on every LG TV or that each should be changed. Use them as prompts to consult your model’s manual and current menus. Change an option only when you understand its effect and have a reason, such as correcting cropping or choosing a different presentation for a particular input.

5. AI picture enhancements

Check whether your model has AI picture controls and what they do before enabling or disabling them. Their availability and effect are model-specific; the guidance cited here does not establish a universal setting to change.

6. Aspect ratio and screen fit

Inspect aspect ratio or screen-fit controls if an image is cropped, stretched, or surrounded by unwanted borders. LG identifies aspect ratio as a picture control, but the right choice depends on the source and model. Do not force a different ratio when it distorts the image.

7. Input-specific picture modes

Check whether your TV saves picture settings separately for each input. If an HDMI device looks different from built-in apps, verify which input and picture mode are active before changing a setting. The cited guidance does not establish how every LG model applies or stores these settings.

8. HDR picture mode

When HDR content is playing, review the picture mode and controls available for that format rather than assuming the SDR choice carries over unchanged. Options can depend on the TV, source, and signal. The cited sources do not establish a universal HDR preset or numeric value.

9. Eye-comfort or blue-light options

If your model has an eye-comfort or blue-light feature, read its description and try it only if you want the effect. The sources used here do not verify a particular option’s availability across LG TVs or support a universal recommendation to enable or disable it.

10. Home-screen promotions and privacy preferences

Review home-screen promotion and privacy options in the menus for your model if you want to control what appears on the home screen or how preferences are handled. The cited picture-setting and dim-screen guidance does not establish which such options exist on particular models, so confirm them in your TV’s manual rather than following a generic path.

Why does my LG TV look so dark?

Energy Saving Step and picture mode are two common settings to check first, according to LG. Use the version-specific path above, then compare picture modes in the room where you watch. If the image remains dim, LG also identifies loose connections and hardware issues as possible causes; settings are not the only explanation.

LG’s September 3, 2026 guide includes sample values for different lighting conditions, but cautions that results depend on the TV and viewing conditions. Those figures are examples, not universal calibration values. Picture controls can vary with the model, input, SDR or HDR format, room, and preference, so do not copy numeric values as if they applied to every set.

How to make changes without losing track

  1. Note the current setting. Before changing a picture option, write down its original value or take a photo of the screen so you can restore it.
  2. Change one setting at a time. Use the TV’s picture or energy-saving menu; follow the path for your webOS version where LG provides one.
  3. Test the content that prompted the change. Compare the same scene or program in the same room, rather than judging from a different source or lighting condition.
  4. Keep the change only if it helps. Restore the original value if the picture becomes less natural, too dim, overly processed, or distorted.

LG’s menu paths are published for broad webOS generations, but the company says menus may vary by model. If a label is missing or the path does not match, consult the manual for your exact TV rather than guessing at a nearby control.
