Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Apple’s iOS 18.6 notes do not identify an iMessage-specific problem, so the timing alone does not establish that the update caused it. Work through the checks below that match your symptom.
First, identify what is failing
Different symptoms point to different fixes. Use this quick guide to choose the right branch before changing settings.

| A red “Not Delivered” alert on one message | Internet or cellular service and whether another message route is available. |
| Messages are green or arrive at an email address instead of your number | Active cellular line and the addresses selected in Send & Receive. |
| Nothing on the iPhone can reach the internet | Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, rather than iMessage settings alone. |
Check internet access and time settings
Open a website in Safari using the same connection you expect Messages to use. iMessage, RCS, and MMS need Wi-Fi or cellular data; SMS needs cellular service. If the website will not load, resolve that connection problem first.
- If other devices also cannot access the internet on the same Wi-Fi network, Apple recommends restarting the router. If possible, test another network or device to narrow down where the failure is. Apple’s connectivity guidance.
- For activation, confirm the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, has the latest iOS available for it, and has the correct time zone under Settings > General > Date & Time. See Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime activation steps.
Confirm the right phone line and Send & Receive addresses
If you use more than one SIM or cellular line, make sure the line you intend to use is turned on. Then open Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive and check that the intended phone number or Apple Account email address is selected. Apple includes line selection and Send & Receive settings among its troubleshooting steps for sending and receiving messages: Can’t send or receive messages on your iPhone.

A green bubble means the message was not sent as an iMessage; it does not, by itself, prove that iOS 18.6 caused a fault. Check the recipient details and available message route before treating every green message as an activation problem.
Fix “Waiting for activation” or phone-number activation
Phone-number activation requires SMS messaging. Apple states: “If you’re using an iPhone, you need SMS messaging to activate your phone number with iMessage and FaceTime.” Your carrier may charge for the activation SMS. You can select an email address for iMessage while phone-number activation is unresolved.

- Go to Settings > Apps > Messages and turn iMessage off.
- Turn FaceTime off as well: open Settings > Apps > FaceTime.
- Restart your iPhone.
- Turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.
Follow Apple’s complete activation guidance if the status remains unresolved. Apple says carrier verification can take up to 24 hours. If your number still has no check mark after that, contact your carrier and ask whether international SMS can be sent and received. If a spinning gear appears beside the number, the iPhone is automatically attempting verification; repeatedly switching iMessage off and on is not necessary.
Retry a message marked “Not Delivered”
- Confirm the iPhone has internet access or cellular service, as appropriate for the message route.
- Tap the red exclamation mark beside the failed message and choose Try Again.
- If it still fails and the option is available, choose Send as Text Message.
SMS, MMS, and RCS availability depends on your carrier and settings. For problems with carrier messaging or SMS activation, the carrier is the relevant support contact; for iMessage that still cannot send or receive after these checks, contact Apple Support. Check for a newer compatible iOS update
Apple’s iOS 18.6 release notes describe bug fixes and security updates, including a Photos memory-movie sharing issue, but do not list an iMessage-specific fix or regression. Apple’s release notes also list later iOS 18 releases, so 18.6 should not be assumed to be the latest version. Check Settings > General > Software Update for an update available to your iPhone and region. The release notes do not establish that installing 18.6 caused an iMessage failure.

- Contact Apple Support if iMessage still cannot send or receive after checking connectivity, the active line, Send & Receive, and the applicable activation or retry steps.
- Contact your carrier for phone-line activation, SMS capability, or carrier messaging problems involving SMS, MMS, or RCS. For an unverified number after Apple’s stated 24-hour window, ask specifically about international SMS.
Apple also documents account-level limitations for blocked accounts; changing or buying a device is not an established remedy for an account block. See Apple’s activation guidance.
