That is not a guarantee for every app, version, driver, or connected device. Before upgrading, check the software publisher’s guidance for any program you rely on—especially for work or specialist hardware.
What Windows 11 app compatibility does—and doesn’t—mean
Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ says most software and accessories that worked with Windows 10 are expected to work with Windows 11. Microsoft does not give a percentage or a complete list of compatible Windows 10 apps, so the broad expectation cannot confirm whether a specific app will work.
Compatibility depends on the exact app and version, and can also depend on drivers, connected hardware, security features, and the PC’s processor architecture or Windows mode. For a definitive answer about a named product, consult its publisher or the accessory manufacturer.
Will Windows 11 remove your apps?
Some apps may be removed during an upgrade if Microsoft knows they cause upgrade problems or may not work correctly—or at all—on Windows 11. If an app is affected, check with its publisher for an updated version. This is different from a guarantee that every other installed app will work flawlessly after the upgrade.

Check your apps and PC before upgrading
- Check the exact app. Note its name and version, then look for Windows 11 compatibility information on the publisher’s support site or ask its support team. Do this first for essential work software, older programs, drivers, and software tied to specialist hardware.
- Check whether the PC can upgrade. Use PC Health Check or Windows Update to check device eligibility. Microsoft lists minimum requirements including 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage; see the full Windows 11 system requirements for the other requirements. Eligibility tools check the PC, not every installed app. Microsoft may also temporarily delay an upgrade when a known compatibility issue could disrupt the experience. - Back up important files. Microsoft recommends backing up before installing a new Windows version; OneDrive is one option, and an external drive is another. A backup protects your files, but does not make an incompatible app work.
What to try if an app has problems
Windows changes to architecture, security features, or system requirements can make older apps incompatible. Microsoft’s older-app compatibility guide recommends trying these steps:
- Check Microsoft Store or the app publisher’s website for an update.
- If there is no update, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- If the issue may involve a device driver, check for driver updates through Windows Update.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact the app publisher or accessory manufacturer about the exact product and version.

Know your options if essential software fails
Microsoft’s normal rollback period for returning to Windows 10 while keeping migrated files and data is 10 days after upgrading. After that, returning requires manually backing up data and performing a clean installation, according to the Windows 11 upgrade FAQ.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Going back may help with a short-term compatibility problem, but Windows 10 is no longer a long-term supported option. Decide how you will handle any essential app that fails before you upgrade.
