Microsoft’s minimum requirements for Windows 10 are a 1 GHz processor or SoC, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit Windows or 2 GB for 64-bit, a 32 GB or larger disk for newer versions, DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM 1.0 driver, and an 800 × 600 display. These are installation thresholds—not recommended specs, a promise of smooth performance, or a guarantee of future updates. Windows 10’s general support ended on October 14, 2025.

Windows 10 minimum requirements at a glance

Component Microsoft’s basic requirement What it means
Processor 1 GHz or faster processor or SoC Clock speed alone does not establish compatibility; architecture and instruction-set support also matter.
Memory 1 GB for 32-bit; 2 GB for 64-bit These are minimum installation thresholds, not recommended amounts for everyday workloads.
Storage 32 GB or larger disk for newer Windows 10 versions This is the disk’s capacity requirement, not a universal free-space figure for installing an update.
Graphics DirectX 9 or later with a WDDM 1.0 driver Both the graphics capability and a compatible driver are required.
Display 800 × 600 This is the minimum resolution, not a suggested display size for comfortable use.

These baseline requirements are listed on Microsoft’s Windows 10 system requirements page. They describe basic installation requirements for ordinary Windows 10 desktop editions, rather than a complete compatibility check for a specific PC.

Processor compatibility involves more than speed

Microsoft’s detailed Windows 10 Minimum Hardware Requirements specify compatible x86 or x64 architecture and support for PAE, NX, and SSE2. For a 64-bit installation, the processor must also support CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, and PrefetchW. A processor advertised as 1 GHz or faster may therefore still fail the full compatibility test.

Beginning with Windows 10 version 2004, Microsoft required new Windows 10 systems distributed by OEMs to use 64-bit builds. That did not invalidate previously manufactured customer PCs running 32-bit Windows: Microsoft continued feature and security update support for those systems and continued to make non-OEM 32-bit installation media available.

How to check an existing PC

  1. Check processor and RAM: Open Settings > System > About. Compare the processor and installed memory with the requirements above, and note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Check disk capacity and available space: Open File Explorer > This PC. The 32 GB figure refers to disk size; insufficient available space can still prevent an update from installing.
  3. Check graphics and display: Confirm that the graphics hardware and driver support DirectX 9 or later and WDDM 1.0, and that the display can provide at least 800 × 600 resolution. The minimum list alone does not verify a particular device’s drivers.
  4. Check device-specific support: Consult the PC manufacturer for driver and hardware support. A PC can meet Microsoft’s baseline and still have compatibility or servicing issues.

Microsoft also identifies outdated drivers, incompatible hardware, insufficient storage, and whether a device remains within its manufacturer’s support period as factors that can affect updates. See its Windows lifecycle FAQ for the distinction between minimum requirements and update support.

Minimum requirements do not equal a performance recommendation

A PC that meets the listed thresholds may be able to install Windows 10, but the thresholds do not promise comfortable performance for a particular workload. The published baseline does not specify recommended RAM or storage for modern apps, and the 32 GB capacity requirement should not be mistaken for the free space every feature update needs. Check the requirements of the software you plan to use and the available space on the actual PC rather than treating the minimums as an upgrade prescription.

Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025

For general Windows 10 releases, Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025. It no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, security fixes, or technical assistance for Windows 10 through standard support. Version 22H2 was the last general feature update. Windows 10 can continue to run, but meeting its hardware requirements does not change its support status. Microsoft’s announcement is available at Windows 10 reaching end of support.

LTSC editions have their own product lifecycles, so the general end-of-support date should not automatically be applied to every LTSC release. Microsoft lists separate timelines for Windows 10 Enterprise and Education and Windows 10 Home and Pro. The lifecycle FAQ also describes a paid Extended Security Updates program for eligible consumers and organizations; eligibility and enrollment terms depend on the applicable program.
