A USB-C charger can power an adjustable bench-style output when it supports USB Power Delivery Programmable Power Supply (USB PD PPS) and a compatible device negotiates a profile with it. The charger alone is not an adjustable supply: a PPS controller or finished device handles negotiation and exposes the output. The usable voltage and current depend on the charger’s advertised profiles, the cable, and the device in between.
How a USB-C PPS power supply works
USB PD PPS lets a compatible sink request adjustments within a charger’s supported range. A device such as PocketPD negotiates with the charger, then provides a controlled output with user controls and live readings. It does not create power beyond what the charger and cable can deliver.
To use PPS adjustment, the charger must advertise a PPS profile. A fixed-voltage PD profile or a non-PD USB source may provide pass-through power or measurements on some devices, but it will not provide the same adjustable behavior. PocketPD’s firmware guide says to select a PPS profile for adjustable voltage and current.
What determines the output you can get?
- Charger profile: Check the charger’s supported PPS voltage and current ranges, not just its headline wattage. The device can request only a profile the charger offers.
- Cable rating: The cable can constrain current. For 5 A operation, USB PD requires a cable rated for 5 A; a lower-rated cable can limit the setup.
- Supply device: The controller or finished supply must support the requested behavior and have an output range that covers your project.
- Load requirements: Confirm the target voltage, expected current, and power draw are within the limits of every part of the chain.
USB PD 3.2 can support up to 240 W under compatible Extended Power Range profiles, according to Renesas Electronics. That is a standards ceiling, not a promise for a particular charger, cable, or PPS supply.

Choose the right kind of USB-C supply

A USB-C PD trigger board is a simpler option when a project needs one fixed negotiated PD voltage. Unless the specific board supports PPS adjustment and the required output behavior, it should not be treated as an adjustable bench supply.
How to set up a PPS supply safely
- Confirm compatibility: Check the charger’s advertised PPS profiles and the cable’s current rating against the voltage and current your load needs.
- Connect the charger and supply device: Use the specified USB-C input and a cable suited to the required current.
- Select a PPS profile: On PocketPD, choose the PPS profile before setting adjustable output. If no PPS profile is available, adjustable supply behavior is absent.
- Keep output off while configuring: Set the target voltage and current limit, then check the displayed values against the load’s requirements.
- Enable output: Connect or power the intended load only after confirming the settings. Monitor the supply during use and stop if readings or behavior are unexpected.
These steps describe a conservative setup sequence; protection features vary by product. The overcurrent, overvoltage, and thermal protections Renesas lists apply to its RTK-251-DRPEVB, not automatically to a DIY build or another supply.

Common compatibility problems
The supply does not show adjustable output
Check whether the charger advertises PPS and whether the device has a PPS profile selected. A fixed PD profile is not interchangeable with PPS.
The output range or current is lower than expected
Compare the charger’s actual profile limits with the cable rating and the supply device’s specifications. The lowest-rated component can constrain delivered current, and a high wattage printed on the charger does not establish that it supports the PPS range you need.

A trigger board gives only one voltage
That is expected for a fixed-voltage trigger. Confirm the board’s own PPS support and output controls before relying on it for adjustment.
