To protect a Microsoft account you use on a Windows 10 PC, turn on two-step verification in the account’s online security settings—not in Windows Settings. If you mean an extra way to unlock the PC itself, set up Windows Hello separately under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. These are different protections: account verification covers online sign-ins, while Windows Hello changes sign-in to that device.
Choose which account or sign-in you want to protect
Windows 10 does not have one universal two-step authentication switch. The setup depends on whether you’re securing a personal Microsoft account, an organization-managed work or school account, or access to the Windows device.
- Personal Microsoft account: Manage verification methods and two-step verification from the Microsoft account Security page.
- Work or school account: Register methods on your organization’s Security info page or follow the setup prompt after signing in. Your administrator controls which methods are available or required.
- Windows 10 device: Configure Windows Hello in Windows Settings. It does not turn on two-step verification for your online account.
Microsoft’s two-step verification and security info guide explains account verification; its Windows sign-in options guide covers the device-level choices.
Turn on two-step verification for a personal Microsoft account
- Open your Microsoft account’s Security settings and choose Manage how I sign in. Follow the current labels shown on the page; available methods and menus can vary.
- Add a verification method, such as Microsoft Authenticator or another option offered for your account, and complete the on-screen prompts.
- Find the Two-step verification section and turn it on. Complete any remaining instructions to require a second verification step when Microsoft requests one.
If you choose Authenticator, the setup can show a QR code to scan. Microsoft also documents adding personal Microsoft accounts in its personal-account setup guide. Authenticator supports personal, work or school, and some third-party accounts, but adding an account to the app does not by itself enable account-level verification; complete enrollment in the account’s security settings.

Set up verification for a work or school account
- Sign in to the work or school account and use the Security info setup prompt, if it appears, or open the organization’s Security info page.
- Choose an allowed method and follow the instructions. The exact choices and enrollment process are set by your organization.
- If the method you need is missing, ask your IT administrator whether it is supported or can be enabled.
Microsoft’s Security info setup instructions describe the sign-in prompt flow. Do not assume that an email address is a second factor: in the documented work or school flow, email can be for password reset only. The organization’s Security info page identifies how each available method can be used; see Microsoft’s email verification method guidance.
Choose a method you can keep using
| Method | Where it applies | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticator app | Personal accounts, work or school accounts, and some third-party accounts | Enrollment differs by account type; an organization can restrict availability. If the QR code cannot be scanned, follow the account setup flow for a manual option, if offered. |
| Phone call or SMS | May be offered for a personal account or by an organization | Phone options are not available for every personal account. Check the methods actually offered instead of assuming SMS is supported. Microsoft account security info guidance. |
| Depends on account type and purpose | For the documented work or school flow, it may support password reset without serving as a second factor. Check the method’s stated use in Security info. | |
| FIDO2 physical security key | Supported Microsoft sign-in flows | For work or school accounts, the administrator must enable the option. Microsoft’s setup guidance specifies a Microsoft-compliant FIDO2 key, Windows 10 May 2019 Update or later, and a supported browser; those requirements apply to that documented work or school flow, not every possible key use. See Microsoft’s security key setup instructions. |
| Windows Hello PIN, face, or fingerprint | Sign-in to the Windows device | This is separate from account-level two-step verification. Face and fingerprint need compatible hardware. |
Microsoft says personal accounts can have up to 10 verification methods. Separately, its work or school security-key guidance says up to 10 security keys can be registered. These are different limits for different contexts; neither means that all methods are enabled or accepted for every account.

Keep recovery options current
Microsoft says users who turn on two-step verification need access to two recovery methods. Keep more than one usable route available, and update the account’s methods after replacing or losing a phone. Otherwise, you may be unable to complete a verification request when your usual device is unavailable. See Microsoft’s guidance on recovery methods and account access.
Set up Windows Hello for sign-in to the PC
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Choose the Windows Hello option available on the PC—PIN, face, or fingerprint—and follow the setup prompts.
- For face sign-in, use a compatible infrared camera; for fingerprint sign-in, the device needs a fingerprint reader. A compatible external device may be connected where appropriate.
Microsoft describes Windows Hello as a way to sign in to a Windows device with facial recognition, a fingerprint, or a PIN. Its Windows Hello setup guide lists the hardware requirements. Setting up Hello does not enable two-step verification for Microsoft services you access online.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Turning on account verification does not replace operating-system security updates. See Microsoft’s account security guidance.
