Facebook’s People search has been described with a City filter on both desktop and mobile. Use it to look for a person you know or browse profiles associated with a place—but it is not a verified, complete list of your existing friends who live there, or a directory of everyone in that city. The interface steps below come from a January 2023 walkthrough, so labels and availability may have changed.
Search for someone you know in a city
When you have a name in mind, combine it with the city in Facebook’s search rather than treating the results as a friends-only city list. A city-filtered People search may surface profiles associated with that place; it does not guarantee the person will appear.
- Sign in to Facebook in a browser or open the Facebook app.
- Use the Search field and enter the person’s name. If useful, include the city in the query.
- Open the People results or choose the People search option.
- Open the City filter, then choose or enter the city.
- Review the profiles shown and check whether a result is the person you mean.
A January 2023 Guiding Tech walkthrough describes this People-search and City-filter sequence. Facebook’s labels and controls can change, and the walkthrough does not establish that the same controls are available to every account today.
Browse People results by city
If you do not have a specific name, the same described City filter can narrow People search to profiles associated with a place. This is a way to browse search results, not a dedicated or comprehensive friend-finder for meeting strangers. The walkthrough says Facebook had removed a feature for finding new people to meet in a particular city; its separate description of general People search by city should not be read as proof that such a discovery directory exists.

Use the browser or mobile app
Browser
- Log in to Facebook and use the search bar.
- Select the option to search for people, then open People results.
- Choose the City filter and select or enter the city.
- Review the profiles returned.
Mobile app
- Open Search and choose the people-results option.
- Select People, then open the filter control.
- Choose City and enter or select the city.
- Review the results.
Both sequences are from the January 2023 walkthrough; they describe an interface at that time, not a guarantee that every current app version or account has those exact controls.
Can you filter only your existing friends by city?
The available instructions do not establish a current, reliable way to get a complete friends-only list for a particular city. Older directions to open Friends and filter by Current City, or use Graph Search queries such as “My friends who live in City,” are historical and reported as no longer working reliably. Do not depend on them as current navigation; see the historical discussion at Stack Exchange.

- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
For reconnecting with a known friend, search by name and use City as a narrowing clue if the filter is available. For suggestions of acquaintances, Facebook’s separate People You May Know feature may help, but a city-specific version of that feature is not established.

Search results should be treated as incomplete. The available information does not establish that every resident of a city appears or exactly how profile visibility, location details, account settings, or ranking determine inclusion. A missing result does not prove that the person is not in that city.

Facebook’s privacy and findability guidance covers controls related to who can add someone as a friend and how easily friends can find an account. The specific current settings and their effects on city-filtered search are not confirmed here, so avoid assuming that a particular setting explains a missing profile.
