Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page. It upgrades the PC you are using; Microsoft says it works only on x64 processors, not Arm-based PCs.
Check whether the Assistant is right for your PC
Before downloading, confirm that your PC meets Microsoft’s listed prerequisites:
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 license.
- Windows 10 version 2004 or later installed.
- At least 9 GB of free disk space for the download.
- An x64 processor. The Assistant does not run on Arm-based PCs.
Microsoft recommends checking your device specifications and your PC manufacturer’s compatibility and driver information. The Assistant also checks hardware compatibility when you run it. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page for current requirements and release information.
Download and run the Installation Assistant
- Open Microsoft’s Download Windows 11 page.
- Find the Windows 11 Installation Assistant section and select its download option.
- Open the downloaded file. You need administrator rights to run the Assistant.
- Let the Assistant check compatibility. If it confirms the PC is eligible, review and accept the license terms, then select Accept and Install.
- When prompted, select Restart Now. The PC may restart several times; do not turn it off while installation is in progress.
Choose the installation method that matches your goal

| Installation media | A clean install, a different PC, or an upgrade run from setup media | This is a separate workflow. A USB drive may be used to create installation media, but it is not needed to download or run the Assistant. |
Microsoft says the Assistant can be used before Windows Update offers the upgrade, but recommends waiting for that offer. Its guidance on installation methods is at Ways to install Windows 11.

If the Assistant cannot confirm compatibility
If the tool cannot determine whether the PC is compatible, Microsoft Support advises running the PC Health Check app and then refreshing the Assistant’s status. If the PC does not meet Windows 11 requirements, Microsoft recommends leaving it on Windows 10 rather than proceeding with the Assistant.
Microsoft’s installation guidance states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Because support status and upgrade guidance can change, check Microsoft’s current Windows 11 installation guidance for the latest information.
