For shared listening, use Spotify’s Discord connection and Listen Along in text chat; Spotify says Listen Along requires Premium and is unavailable during voice chat.
Why Discord pauses Spotify
Discord Support documents an auto-pause when you transmit with your microphone in voice chat for 30 seconds while Spotify is playing. The pause can also occur during screenshare or Go Live. Discord says the feature helps it comply with Spotify’s terms because Spotify is intended for personal and private use; that is Discord’s explanation of its behavior, not a broader legal conclusion. Listen to Spotify while you talk
If you want to hear your music without transmitting continuously, Discord recommends Push-to-Talk or changing voice-activity sensitivity so background sound does not activate your mic. These settings address mic activation; they do not guarantee that Spotify will keep playing if Discord detects transmission.
- Push-to-Talk: Your mic transmits only while you hold its assigned key. This can keep ordinary listening from triggering continuous transmission.
- Voice-activity sensitivity: Adjust the threshold so your mic is less likely to activate from background audio. Choose a setting that still picks up your speech reliably.
Let friends listen along through Discord
For synchronized listening, use Discord’s Spotify connection rather than sending the music through your mic. Spotify’s support instructions say Listen Along requires Premium and cannot be used during voice chat, so use a text chat instead. If a Free user and a Premium user listen together, Spotify says the Premium listener hears silence during ads played for the Free user.

- In Discord, open User Settings > Connections and connect your Spotify account.
- In a text chat, find a friend’s Spotify activity and choose Listen Along.
- If the option is unavailable, check that the account has Premium and that you are not in voice chat.
Spotify also notes that crossfade can make playback stop abruptly for listeners. A mobile device going to sleep at the end of a track can end Listen Along. If Discord does not identify the playback device, selecting a Spotify client device or starting a track may help. Discord’s game detection can take precedence over Spotify status. Audio routing for a stream or recording
Audio-routing tools can give you more control over which app audio reaches a call or recording. They are a separate workflow from Listen Along and do not establish that Spotify will continue playing in Discord when your mic transmits, or that rebroadcasting is permitted.

- Wave Link: Elgato’s guide shows assigning Spotify to a dedicated Wave Link Music channel, with Wave:3 among its example devices. This is an optional setup for people already using that audio workflow, not a requirement for listening through Discord. See Elgato’s Wave Link setup guide.
Neither routing guide documents a way to prevent Discord from pausing Spotify during mic transmission. Discord states: “Because Spotify is intended for personal and private use, the auto pause function allows us to stay in compliance with Spotify’s Terms & Conditions outlined at https://www.spotify.com/legal/end-user-agreement/.”

If your goal is simply to talk while you listen, start with Discord’s mic settings. If you want friends to hear the same tracks, use Listen Along in text chat. Choose routing tools only when you need separate audio control for a stream or recording.
