Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can view property lines in Google Earth either by turning on its built-in Land parcels layer, where available, or by importing parcel data from the government agency responsible for the property. Google’s listed layer is limited to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States and requires the Professional plan. Treat any line on the map as a visualization aid, not proof of a legal boundary.
Check whether Google Earth has a Land parcels layer for your location
Google’s available-data-layer catalog lists Land parcels, sourced from Google Maps, for the Professional plan in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. Google describes parcels as distinct, contiguous plots with unique identifiers often used for ownership or taxation. Coverage and available layers can change, so check the current Google Earth data-layer catalog for your location and plan.
If you have access to the layer, open Google Earth, find its data layers, and enable Land parcels. The exact controls can vary by version. If the layer is not listed or does not cover the property, use an official local parcel source instead; Google’s listed coverage is not a worldwide parcel lookup.
Find an official parcel map or download for the property
Search for the property’s county or municipal GIS or assessor site, or the relevant state, provincial, land registry, or cadastral agency. These authorities may offer a web map, a downloadable dataset, or a link that opens parcel information in Google Earth. Coverage, update schedules, and file formats vary by jurisdiction.

Prefer a dataset or viewer that identifies its source, geographic coverage, and update date. A local government GIS or assessor office is often a useful starting point, but confirm that the data is intended for the location and purpose you have in mind. Google Help Community discussions include examples of readers looking for parcel lines and IDs through local sources, but those discussions are not official product instructions.
Import parcel data into Google Earth on a computer
Google documents KML, KMZ, GeoJSON, and zipped Shapefile as supported formats for importing data layers. For a KML or KMZ with up to 10,000 features, Google also documents importing the items as project features or opening a local KML file. The available choices can depend on the file type and size; large files may be handled as read-only data layers.

- Open Google Earth on a computer. Choose New > Import file, or open a project and choose File > Import.
- Select the downloaded file. If Google Earth offers the choice, select Import as a data layer. For a KML or KMZ with up to 10,000 features, use the project-feature option or open the local KML if that better suits your needs.
- Locate the property and inspect the overlay. Check the parcel identifier and compare it with official records when available; confirm that the file covers the correct jurisdiction and is current enough for your purpose.
See Google’s instructions for importing data into Google Earth for the current interface and format details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the overlay for orientation, not legal boundary decisions
An imported line shows the geometry in the source dataset; it does not establish the legal position of a boundary. Natural Resources Canada’s Canada Lands in Google Earth User’s Guide, version 3.1 (January 2020), says its cadastral data can support planning and management but “should not be used for defining boundaries.” The guide concerns Canada Lands and is not a universal parcel layer, but its warning makes the distinction clear.

For a fence, construction setback, boundary dispute, or other decision that depends on the exact legal line, consult the recorded survey or plan and a licensed land surveyor in the relevant jurisdiction. A visual match between an overlay and aerial imagery is not enough to determine where a legal boundary lies. A commercial overview from ParcelVision likewise describes Google Earth overlays as approximate rather than survey-grade; treat that as vendor context, not independent accuracy testing.

Choose the right method for your goal
- Quick visual reference: Try the built-in layer if it is available for your location and plan.
- More local detail or parcel IDs: Look for the responsible government GIS, assessor, land registry, or cadastral agency, then import its supported file if needed.
- Field viewing: A web viewer or a mobile-compatible dataset may be more convenient than preparing an import on a computer; confirm the local source’s coverage and update date.
- Legal or construction decision: Use recorded survey documents and advice from a licensed land surveyor, not a map overlay alone.
