PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available is grayed out, an administrator may be controlling it through Windows Update policy. On a work or school PC, ask IT to check the device’s update settings. On a personal PC, first check whether it is still managed by a workplace, school, previous owner, or another administrator. The wording alone does not identify the cause on your device.
What the switch controls—and what it does not
The setting affects when Windows offers additional non-security updates, fixes, feature updates, improvements, and some gradual feature rollouts. It does not turn routine security updates on or off: Microsoft says regular security updates continue whether the switch is enabled or disabled. Microsoft Support explains the setting.
Turning it on can help a device receive eligible updates earlier, but it does not guarantee immediate delivery. Windows may offer changes gradually, and compatibility checks or safeguard holds can delay an update.
If this is a work or school computer
Management policy is a documented reason the switch may be unavailable. Microsoft says an administrator can manage it on a managed device using the AllowOptionalContent client policy. Ask your organization’s IT administrator to check the effective policy and the PC’s update-management configuration; do not try to bypass the organization’s controls.

The relevant Group Policy setting is Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update > Enable optional updates. Microsoft documents a corresponding MDM policy, ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/Update/AllowOptionalContent, in its Windows Update client policy guidance.
What the administrator can choose
| Policy choice | Effect |
|---|---|
| Automatically receive optional updates, including controlled feature rollouts (CFRs) | Windows automatically offers optional updates and includes controlled feature rollouts. |
| Automatically receive optional updates | Windows automatically offers optional updates without the CFR behavior described in the policy choice above. |
| Users can select which optional updates to receive | Users can choose optional updates and enable the setting. |
| Other values or policy absent | Microsoft documents these as not receiving optional updates. |
The choices are deployment controls, not a recommended setting for every organization. IT should select one that fits its update policy and deferral settings.

If this is your personal computer
- Check for management. Look for a work or school connection or device management that may remain from a current or former organization, or a configuration applied by a previous owner or administrator.
- If you find a work or school connection, contact that organization or the person who manages the PC. They may need to review the effective update policy.
- If no management is apparent, note your Windows edition and version, then have a Windows administrator or Microsoft Support inspect the applicable policy before changing it. The grayed-out switch by itself does not establish which policy, if any, is responsible.
- If you are trying to get a particular feature update, check whether your device is eligible and whether a compatibility safeguard is delaying its offer.
Avoid registry edits or disconnecting device management as a first-line fix. Those steps are not the supported user remedy established by Microsoft’s guidance and may conflict with update management.
Why enabling it may not deliver an update immediately
The switch changes update delivery preference; it does not override eligibility, staged rollouts, compatibility checks, or an organization’s policy. For example, Microsoft’s September 29, 2026 announcement for Windows 11 version 26H2 says the update is offered to eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices through a controlled rollout, and that compatibility safeguard holds may delay availability. See the Windows 11 2026 Update announcement for current rollout details.
