If it still does not appear, test a data-capable cable, another USB port, and—if possible—another computer before checking software and updates.
Why won’t Windows 10 recognize my iPhone or iPad?
Apple’s current Windows instructions use the Apple Devices app. When the connection is working, the iPhone or iPad appears in the app’s sidebar. Charging by itself does not confirm that the cable can transfer data: some cables charge but do not support the data connection needed for device management.
Start with the connection and Trust prompt
- Open Apple Devices on the Windows PC.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the PC using USB, and make sure both ends of the cable are fully connected. Apple says the device should charge when connected correctly.
- Unlock the device and leave its Home Screen visible.
- If “Trust This Computer?” appears on the Apple device, tap Trust. Check the Apple Devices sidebar for the device.
Apple’s Windows 10 connection guide describes the connection and Trust prompt. Its file-transfer guide also requires connecting the device and trusting the computer.
What if the Trust prompt never appears?
If you previously chose “Don’t Trust,” or the prompt does not appear, Apple recommends resetting the device’s Location & Privacy settings, then reconnecting and responding to the Trust prompt. This is the specific Location & Privacy reset—not a factory reset that erases the device. Follow Apple’s current steps in its Trust alert guidance, since menu names and paths can vary by software version.

Why does my iPhone charge but not show up in Windows?
A cable can provide power without supporting data. Try another cable only if the existing one may be faulty or charge-only; the replacement must support both data and charging. Match the connector on the Apple-device end and the PC end to your actual devices and ports. Apple states, “The cable must support both data and charging.”
If you are shopping for a replacement, search for an “iPhone iPad USB data cable” and check the connector types and explicit data-transfer support before buying. A new cable is not necessarily needed if the existing one supports data and works properly.

Isolate the cable, USB port, or computer
- No chime or vibration: Unplug the cable and check the device’s charging port for debris. Apple does not specify a cleaning tool; do not use a sharp object to probe the port.
- Still not detected: Try a different USB port, then another cable that supports data and charging.
- Need to narrow down the fault: Connect the device to another computer, if available. If it appears there, the original PC or its software may be involved; if it does not, the device, cable, or connection may still be the cause.
These checks follow Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for an iPhone or iPad that does not appear on a computer.
Check Windows and Apple software
If the device remains missing after the connection checks, check for software conflicts and install available updates for Windows and iOS or iPadOS. The current Windows-specific Apple guidance centers on Apple Devices rather than a general manual driver-install procedure.

Some older regional Apple instructions mention updating iTunes and Apple software for Windows, then checking drivers through Device Manager. Treat those steps as conditional for a PC that still uses that legacy software setup, not as a universal fix for Apple Devices. For that situation, consult Apple’s regional troubleshooting page and follow instructions that match the software installed on your PC.

If the device remains unrecognized after trying a data-capable cable, another USB port or computer, and the relevant software updates, Apple says service may be needed. Use Apple Support to determine the appropriate next step rather than installing an unrelated driver-updater utility.
