If your iPhone isn’t ringing, first check whether every call is silent or only certain calls are missing. For all callers, check Silent mode, Focus, and ringtone volume. If calls go straight to voicemail or only some callers are affected, check call screening, blocked contacts, and cellular availability. Use the speaker test to tell a settings issue from a possible hardware problem.
First, identify what is happening
Notice whether incoming calls appear on the screen but make no sound, ring too quietly, or never appear and go to voicemail. Also check whether the problem affects everyone or only particular callers. Those differences point to different settings.

- Every caller, no audible tone: Check Silent mode, Focus, ringtone volume and selection, then the speaker.
- One or a few callers: Check that contact’s ringtone, Focus rules for people, and blocked contacts.
- Unknown callers only: Check call screening and filtering.
- Calls go straight to voicemail: Check Focus and Phone settings, then your cellular connection.
Turn off Silent mode
Silent mode and Focus are separate controls. Apple says that when Silent mode is on, iPhone does not ring or play alerts or other sound effects, though it may still vibrate. The control depends on the model: an iPhone with an Action button can use that button or Control Center or Settings; a model with a Ring/Silent switch uses the switch. Check Apple’s Silence iPhone guide if you are unsure which control applies.
Check Focus settings
Open Control Center and look for an active Focus such as Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Work. Turn it off temporarily and ask someone to call you. If calls ring again, Focus was silencing or limiting them.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
If you use Focus intentionally, keep it on and adjust its allowed or silenced people and call settings instead. Check for a schedule or automation if the issue returns at particular times. Apple’s Silent mode and Do Not Disturb guidance explains how these controls affect calls and alerts.
Raise the ringtone volume and confirm a ringtone
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider to the right. This controls the volume of incoming call ringtones and alerts.
- Check that a ringtone is selected, then use the slider to test whether the iPhone plays sound.
Apple’s guide to iPhone sounds and vibrations describes the volume and sound settings. If only one person’s calls are silent, open that person’s contact card and check whether a different ringtone has been assigned. iPhone allows individual contact ringtones as well as a default ringtone; see Apple’s instructions for selecting ringtones.

If calls go straight to voicemail, review call handling
On current Apple guidance, open Settings > Apps > Phone. Review options for screening or filtering unknown callers, and check Blocked Contacts for numbers that may have been added by mistake. If the problem is limited to unknown callers, these settings are a particularly relevant place to look.
Apple also recommends updating iOS when calls do not ring and go straight to voicemail. If cellular service is weak or unavailable, Wi-Fi Calling may help, but it is available only when your carrier supports it. Phone settings and labels can vary with iOS version, carrier, and region. See Apple’s guidance for calls that do not ring and go straight to voicemail for current call-handling steps.

Test the speaker before seeking service
Use the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings > Sounds & Haptics as a sound test. Check whether a case, debris, or another obstruction is covering the speaker or receiver openings. If an opening is visibly dirty or blocked, Apple advises using a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Cleaning is only appropriate for visible debris; it will not resolve call filtering, a carrier issue, or an internal fault.
Apple says the speaker may need service if the test produces no sound or the speaker control on the Ringtone and Alerts slider is dimmed. Its speaker troubleshooting guidance covers these checks and the service indication.
