Yes—the iPhone 16e has an Action button. By default, press and hold it to switch Silent mode on or off; you can assign it a different action in Settings > Action Button.
How to change what the Action button does
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Action Button.
- Swipe through the available actions until the one you want appears.
- If the action offers extra options, open its options menu and choose a specific control, shortcut, or accessibility feature. Without that selection, those assignments do nothing.
- Press and hold the Action button to perform the selected action. Many choices toggle a setting on or off.
Apple describes the button as a way to reach actions you use often. A practical choice depends on what you use regularly, what you need to open quickly, and whether an action has setup or availability requirements.
What can the iPhone 16e Action button do?
Apple’s current iPhone user guide lists these assignments:
- Silent Mode: Switch between Silent and Ring for calls and alerts. This is the default.
- Focus: Turn on a Focus to silence notifications and filter distractions.
- Camera: Open the Camera app.
- Visual Intelligence: Explore nearby places and objects using Apple Intelligence, subject to the requirements below.
- Flashlight: Turn on the flashlight.
- Voice Memo: Record audio, such as a note or musical idea.
- Recognize Music: Identify a nearby or on-device song with Shazam.
- Translate: Translate phrases or have a conversation in another language.
- Magnifier: Use the iPhone as a magnifying glass to zoom in on and detect nearby objects.
- Controls: Open a control you select.
- Shortcut: Open an app or run a shortcut you select.
- Accessibility: Quickly use an accessibility feature you select.
- No Action: Leave the button without an assigned function.
Visual Intelligence requirements and uses
Apple’s published requirements for Visual Intelligence on iPhone 16e are iOS 18.3 or later and Apple Intelligence turned on. Apple says the feature can summarize or copy text, translate text, detect phone numbers or email addresses and offer to add them to contacts, identify animals or plants, search Google for an item, and use ChatGPT for problem solving. Apps can add their own Action button functions
Apple’s February 18, 2025 announcement gave examples of app-specific uses: opening the camera in Snapchat, unlocking a car door with FordPass, and tracking a child’s sleep schedule with Napper. These are examples, not a guarantee that every app offers an Action button option or that an option is available in every region. Apple also highlighted Shazam, Voice Memos, Focus, Translate, Magnifier, and Shortcuts as possible uses.
