1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo earn the Python Institute’s PCAP credential, prepare for the active PCAP-31-03 exam, meet its 70% passing threshold, and take it through an available testing channel. No formal prerequisite is required, though the Institute recommends PCEP first. The most efficient preparation starts with the official syllabus, prioritizes object-oriented programming (34% of the listed exam weight), and uses coding practice alongside the free Python Essentials 2 course. Confirm the current exam version, local price, language and delivery rules before buying or scheduling.
Which PCAP exam version should you prepare for?
The Python Institute currently identifies PCAP-31-03 as active and PCAP-31-04 as in development, with release scheduled for Q3 2026. That is the provider’s stated schedule, not a guarantee. Check the official PCAP page again before buying version-specific materials or booking an exam.
PCAP is the associate-level credential in the Python Institute’s general-purpose programming track. PCEP is the entry-level certification before it, and PCPP1 is the subsequent professional-level option; see the Institute’s certification overview.
What are the PCAP requirements and exam format?
There are no formal prerequisites for PCAP, although the Python Institute recommends earning PCEP first. For PCAP-31-03, the Institute lists 40 questions, 65 minutes of exam time plus 10 minutes for the NDA and tutorial, and a passing score of 70%. The credential is listed as valid for five years. Confirm these details on the active exam page when you register.
#1 Best Overall
The syllabus says items can include single-select, multiple-select, coding, scenario-based and interactive questions. It describes scoring as up to 40 points per item, with raw scores normalized and reported as a percentage. The syllabus was last updated March 7, 2022, so compare it with the active exam page before relying on it for a current sitting. See the PCAP-31-0x syllabus.
What should you study for the PCAP exam?
Use the PCAP-31-03 syllabus as your checklist. Its five areas and listed weights are:
| Exam area | Listed weight | Listed items |
|---|---|---|
| Object-Oriented Programming | 34% | 12 |
| Miscellaneous topics: list comprehensions, lambdas, closures and I/O | 22% | 9 |
| Strings | 18% | 8 |
| Exceptions | 14% | 5 |
| Modules and Packages | 12% | 6 |
Weights and item counts are from the Python Institute syllabus, last updated March 7, 2022; the listed item counts total 40. The syllabus frames the minimally qualified candidate as someone able to develop multi-module applications, model problems using object-oriented concepts, and apply modules, exceptions, strings and file I/O to produce maintainable solutions. Treat the weights as a guide to allocating practice—not a promise about the exact questions on a future exam.
How to build a practical PCAP study plan
- Start with the official syllabus. Turn each objective into a checklist and note which topics you can already explain and code. Verify that the syllabus remains aligned with the active exam version.
- Check your foundations. Review PCEP-level Python concepts, especially if you are new to programming. PCEP is recommended, not an admission requirement.
- Allocate practice by the listed weights. Give the largest share to OOP, then the miscellaneous topics, strings, exceptions, and modules/packages. Adjust for your own weak areas rather than treating the percentages as a fixed timetable.
- Write and debug code. Practise small programs involving classes and objects, string handling, exceptions, imports, file I/O, comprehensions, lambdas and closures. Explain why code behaves as it does, then test edge cases.
- Practise exam-style reasoning. Mix coding with single- and multiple-selection questions and scenario problems. Review incorrect answers by tracing the code and revisiting the relevant syllabus objective.
The official materials do not establish a required number of study hours or guarantee a pass. Set your own schedule based on your starting level and use practice results to decide when to move on.

Which resources can help you prepare?
- Official syllabus: Use the PCAP syllabus to define coverage and prioritize study.
- Free course: The Python Institute lists Python Essentials 2 through Edube Interactive and Cisco Networking Academy. Use it to reinforce concepts, then check that course coverage maps to the current PCAP objectives.
- Optional official practice test: The Institute lists a PCAP-31-03 practice-test compendium for purchase and an optional practice-test voucher. Check the current listing and version before paying.
- Optional book: Google Books catalogs PCAP Certified Associate Python Programming Exam Preparation by Georgio Daccache, published by Amazon Digital Services LLC-KDP on November 10, 2023, at 136 pages. The catalog describes it as PCAP-31-03 preparation; it does not establish current availability or quality. Compare its edition and contents with the official objectives before using it.
- Instructor-led training: The Python Institute lists online training as another option. Check the provider’s course outline against the exam syllabus before enrolling.
How much does the PCAP exam cost?

| Option | Listed starting price |
|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $295 |
| Exam plus retake | $345 |
| Exam plus retake and practice test | $359 |

How do you book and take the exam?
The Python Institute lists TestNow and Pearson VUE as delivery channels. The PCAP-31-03 page lists English through either channel and Spanish and Japanese through TestNow. Availability can depend on location and delivery option, so check the booking flow before purchasing a voucher.
- Choose the delivery channel and language. Compare local availability, total checkout price, included retake terms, and the rules for remote or in-person testing.
- Purchase the appropriate voucher or package. Read the package terms carefully; not every option includes a retake or practice test.
- Set up the matching account and schedule. For TestNow, follow its diagnostics and check-in process. For Pearson VUE, book through its system; Pearson VUE offers test-center appointments and OnVUE online proctoring.
- Review the channel’s testing rules. Check identification, equipment, room, check-in and rescheduling requirements for your chosen delivery method before exam day.
The Python Institute says candidates who fail must wait 15 days before retaking. Retake conditions depend on the purchase option; Pearson VUE retake vouchers require a request within 90 days. Read the current terms for your voucher and provider before relying on a retake.

Is PCAP right for you?
PCAP makes sense if you want a structured assessment of intermediate Python topics, particularly object-oriented programming and the language features covered in its syllabus. If you are still building foundational programming skills, work through entry-level material first; PCEP is recommended but not mandatory. If you already have strong Python experience, compare your skills against every listed objective before deciding whether the credential fits your goals.
