Then set it up with the child’s own Apple Account through Family Sharing, choose age-appropriate apps and Screen Time controls, and check the phone’s battery and condition. The exact options depend on the iPhone model, iOS version, and your region.
Prepare the iPhone without carrying over your personal data
Do not simply give your child a phone that is still signed in to your Apple Account. A proper handoff protects your personal information and keeps the child’s activity separate from yours.
- Back up the iPhone. Save anything you want to keep before erasing the device. Apple’s guide to setting up an iPhone or iPad for a child recommends backing up a reused device.
- Sign out of your Apple Account. Follow Apple’s handoff steps to sign out before giving the phone to someone else. See Apple’s instructions for selling, giving away, or trading in an iPhone.
- Erase the iPhone. Use Apple’s erase-and-handoff guidance to remove personal information and settings. The exact Settings labels can vary with iOS; follow the current steps in Apple’s handoff guide.
- Confirm activation is possible. If Find My was enabled, erasing the iPhone removes Activation Lock as part of the handoff process. If the setup screen still asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, do not give the phone to your child yet; complete the account-removal steps in Apple’s pre-handoff checklist.
Set up Family Sharing and the child’s Apple Account
Your child should use a separate Apple Account, added to your Family Sharing group, rather than your personal account. Family Sharing lets a parent or guardian manage relevant family settings, including Screen Time and eligible purchase approvals. Apple’s child-device setup guidance explains when to create or add a child account; age requirements vary by country or region.
Choose Quick Start or manual setup

Apple documents both routes in its Family Sharing setup guide for a child’s device. If the iPhone’s software is older or the prompts differ, use the manual route and check the instructions shown on that device.

Choose apps and configure Screen Time together
Once setup is complete, install or allow only the apps your child needs. Then review Screen Time settings with them and adjust the limits to fit their age and your family’s expectations. Screen Time can manage downtime, app and website access, communications, content restrictions, and eligible purchases; not every option appears on every device or in every region.
- Downtime: Choose periods when selected apps and notifications should be limited.
- App and website access: Set limits for app categories or individual apps, and review web-content settings.
- Communications: Review which communication features and contacts are available during allowed periods, where supported.
- Content and purchases: Set age-appropriate content restrictions and decide whether eligible purchases require approval.
- Safety options: Check settings such as Communication Safety and audio or web limits if they are available for the child’s age, region, iOS version, and device.
Apple’s parental-control setup guide and Screen Time guide for a child describe the available controls. Defaults and feature availability can vary, so inspect the actual options in Settings rather than assuming a particular limit or safety feature is already enabled. Check battery health and basic condition
Before relying on the iPhone as your child’s everyday device, inspect the screen, buttons, cameras, speakers, charging connection, and wireless connectivity. On supported models and software, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to review maximum capacity and any battery messages. Apple recommends checking battery condition when evaluating a pre-owned iPhone; see its pre-owned iPhone checklist.
If Battery Health reports a problem or the phone cannot reliably hold a charge, check service or assessment options before treating it as ready. The exact service availability and cost depend on the model and location.

Choose a case only after identifying the model
A protective case can help guard against everyday bumps, but iPhone cases are model-specific. Check the exact model in the iPhone’s settings or on the device before buying, and confirm that the case listing names that model. No single case can be recommended without knowing which iPhone you have.
