Pinterest is a visual discovery engine for finding ideas like recipes, home and style inspiration, and more. To use it, search or browse for Pins you like, save them to boards, and return to those boards when you need the ideas. A personal account is enough for ordinary browsing and collecting; you do not need a business account.
What Pinterest is—and how Pins work
Pinterest is built around visual discovery. A Pin can be an image, video, or product. You can browse recommendations, search for a topic, save Pins to boards, and follow a Pin’s link to learn more or visit a retailer. Treat a Pin as a visual bookmark, not necessarily the complete instructions: open it and check its destination for details.

How to get started on Pinterest

Create a personal account
Use Pinterest’s website or app signup flow. It asks for account details and age, then prompts you to choose a country or region and topics. The exact prompts and order can vary by device and may change. Follow the current instructions in Pinterest’s account-creation guide.

Find ideas in search or your home feed
Browse the home feed for recommendations influenced by your recent activity and the accounts you follow, or enter a topic in search. On the mobile app, visual search may help you find similar ideas using an image or selected object. Pinterest says visual search is unavailable on ads and collage Pins. Open a Pin and save it
Choose a Pin that interests you, open it, and select Save. Pick an existing board or create a new one. If the Pin links to a recipe, guide, or retailer, open that destination and check that it contains the details you need.

Return to your boards
Boards collect Pins so you can find them again by topic or project. Use a clear name such as “Weeknight dinners” or “Garden ideas” rather than a vague label. For board visibility and collaboration options, see Pinterest’s board guide.

A board is a collection of Pins. Choose its visibility and contributors based on whether you want a private reference collection, a public collection, or a shared project.

Use private boards for ideas you do not want displayed publicly, and group boards when invited people need to contribute. Pinterest’s board guidance covers these distinctions.
Do you need a Pinterest business account?
No—not to browse and save Pins. A personal account is the simplest choice for collecting ideas. A business account is aimed at people publishing or marketing content and adds tools such as Pinterest Analytics and advertising options.

Pinterest says an existing personal account can be converted while retaining Pins and followers, but a private personal account must first be made public. Creating a new business account also has email and desktop conditions; consult the current business-account instructions before switching.

You can use Pinterest without publishing anything. If you want to share an idea, Pinterest’s guide describes creating a Pin by uploading an image or video, then adding a title, description, optional link, and board. The link can take viewers to a fuller explanation or another destination, so check that it goes where you intend. Follow Pinterest’s Pin-creation guide for the current steps.

A simple way to keep Pinterest useful
- Search for a specific topic when you know what you want; browse the home feed when you want recommendations.
- Save Pins to clearly named boards so you can retrieve them later.
- Before relying on a Pin, open it and verify its destination and details.
- Choose public, private, or collaborative boards according to who should see or add to the collection.
- Start with a personal account unless you specifically need business publishing, analytics, or advertising tools.
