The proposed Elon Musk–Mark Zuckerberg cage match never happened because the two men did not agree on a firm date or an officially arranged event. Zuckerberg said Musk was not serious and kept changing the plan; Musk taunted Zuckerberg and suggested he had backed out. Those were their competing public accounts, not proof of either man’s private motives.
How the proposed fight began
In June 2023, Musk publicly said he was up for a cage match after criticizing Meta’s plans for a social platform that would compete with Twitter. Zuckerberg replied, “send me location,” and Musk named a Las Vegas venue. Reuters described the exchange as public bluster amid rivalry between their social platforms, while noting that Zuckerberg had trained in jiu-jitsu. Reuters via Investing.com, June 2023
What the proposed event was—and was not
The details shifted as the men discussed the idea publicly. Musk floated an MMA fight and said it would be streamed on X, with proceeds going to veterans’ charities. Zuckerberg said he had suggested August 26 but had not received confirmation from Musk; he also suggested using a more reliable platform for the charity fundraising. Musk later proposed Rome, Italy, as the setting and described an ancient-Rome visual theme. But he also said the date was “still in flux” and raised the possibility that he might need neck and back surgery. The Las Vegas and Rome references, the proposed date, the livestream and charity plan were ideas under discussion—not evidence that a fight had been booked. ABC News, August 14, 2023

Why each man said the match stalled
Zuckerberg’s account
On August 14, 2023, Zuckerberg said he was moving on because Musk would not confirm an actual date and had mentioned needing surgery. He said Musk then asked to do a practice round at Zuckerberg’s home. “I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious, and it’s time to move on,” Zuckerberg wrote on Threads. He left open the possibility of a real match if Musk agreed to a date and an official event. Ars Technica, August 14, 2023
Musk’s response
Musk replied on X with taunts, including “Zuck is a chicken,” and framed the lack of a practice round as evidence that Zuckerberg had backed out. That was Musk’s characterization; it does not establish that Zuckerberg canceled a confirmed fight. The contemporary reports describe no mutually confirmed date or finalized event.
