The per mille sign is ‰ (Unicode U+2030) and means “per thousand.” In Word, type 2030 and press Alt+X to insert it. In Excel and PowerPoint, use Insert > Symbol; Microsoft documents that menu method across these Office apps.
What the per mille sign means
‰ is the Unicode U+2030 PER MILLE SIGN, also known as “permille” or “per thousand.” It describes a value per 1,000. By contrast, % means per 100, so substituting one sign for the other changes the scale. Unicode gives blood alcohol content and salinity as examples of per mille usage.
Do not confuse it with the adjacent ‱ (U+2031), the per ten thousand sign. That character represents a different scale.
Insert ‰ in Word with Alt+X
- Place the cursor where you want the sign.
- Type
2030. - Press Alt+X. Word converts the hexadecimal code to ‰.
If 2030 immediately follows another character, select only the four-digit code before pressing Alt+X. This is the quickest documented route when you know the code and are working in Word. Microsoft’s instructions cover listed Word versions, though keyboard behavior can vary by platform or release; use the labels and behavior available in your version.

Insert ‰ through the Symbol menu
The visual menu route works across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It is useful when you do not want to remember the code or want to browse for the character.
- Place the cursor or insertion point where the sign should go.
- Choose Insert > Symbol. If the character is not visible in the initial list, choose More Symbols.
- Find and select ‰, then insert it.
Microsoft documents this method for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ribbon appearance and exact labels can differ by app version. In Excel and PowerPoint, use this documented Symbol menu route rather than assuming Word’s Alt+X conversion also works there. See Microsoft’s instructions for inserting symbols and its Unicode character guidance.

Fix a missing or incorrect-looking sign
- Check the font. Character availability depends on the selected font. Microsoft Support emphasizes that the font is critical when inserting symbols and special characters.
- Use More Symbols. Open the expanded symbol dialog and inspect the selected font while locating the per mille sign.
- For frequent use in Word, consider a personal shortcut. Microsoft describes setting up AutoCorrect for symbols used often. This is an optional customization; there is no particular built-in per mille shortcut established here.
Microsoft’s guidance lists Microsoft 365 and multiple perpetual Office generations, but does not settle every menu label or keyboard behavior for every operating system and release. If your ribbon differs, look for the Symbol command under Insert in your version.
