Check the cable and router port first, then compare another device, use Windows diagnostics, and work through network-stack or adapter fixes only if simpler checks do not resolve it. The steps below follow Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
What “Unidentified Network” tells you—and what it does not
Windows is reporting that it has not identified the wired network in the way it expects; the message does not, by itself, prove that the cable, router, internet service, or PC is at fault. It may appear with “No internet,” but that wording is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance checks the physical connection, Windows settings, network components, adapter driver, and other devices before narrowing the cause. Microsoft Support’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Start with the cable, port, and router
- Reseat both ends. Unplug and firmly reconnect the Ethernet cable at the PC and router.
- Check the router port. Plug the PC into an Ethernet or LAN port, not the router’s Internet/WAN port, which is used to connect the router to a modem.
- Try another cable if one is available. A known-good cable is a useful test; replacing it is not guaranteed to solve the problem.
- Restart the modem and router. Follow the device maker’s procedure, since steps can vary. Microsoft’s general guidance is to unplug power, wait at least about 30 seconds, then power the modem and router back on. If you have a single modem/router combination unit, restart that device. Other people using the network will temporarily lose their Wi-Fi connection.
Use other devices to locate the problem
Test Wi-Fi on a phone or another device, and connect another computer to the same router by Ethernet if possible. If another computer can use Ethernet, the first PC becomes the likelier place to investigate. If other devices also cannot connect, focus on the router, modem, or internet service provider. These comparisons narrow the scope; they do not establish a specific fault on their own.
Run Windows diagnostics and check Ethernet settings
Windows 11
Start with the Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Get Help app, as Microsoft currently recommends. Then open Settings > Network & internet and select Ethernet to review its status. If Windows displays an error such as “Action needed,” inspect the Ethernet details shown there.

Windows 10
Use the Windows network troubleshooter from the network settings or status area. The exact route and labels can vary by Windows version. Microsoft’s guide includes troubleshooting routes for both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Reset Windows network components from Command Prompt
If the physical checks and diagnostics do not help, Microsoft recommends running these commands in order from an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and execute each line separately:

Check whether the Ethernet connection works after the commands finish. These commands reset or refresh Windows networking components; they are not a substitute for checking the cable, router, or service connection.
Reinstall the Ethernet adapter driver only with a recovery plan
If earlier steps fail, Microsoft advises uninstalling the Ethernet adapter driver and restarting the PC so Windows can look for a driver again. Before removing it, obtain a backup driver from the PC manufacturer if possible. If the affected computer is offline, download the driver using another PC and transfer it with a USB flash drive. This precaution matters most when you might otherwise lose your only way to get back online; Microsoft also flags driver troubleshooting when the issue began after an update.

Keep Network reset as a last resort
Microsoft describes Network reset as a later step because it removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters and returns settings to defaults after a restart. Known networks may be set to a public profile. VPN software and Hyper-V virtual switches or other network-virtualization software may need to be reinstalled or configured again.
Because it can undo network configuration, use Network reset only after the less disruptive checks and fixes. Before proceeding, note any VPN or virtual-network settings you may need to restore.

Windows version note
Microsoft’s guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That support change is separate from the cause of an “Unidentified Network” message.
