There isn’t one folder containing every Windows wallpaper. First check Settings > Personalization > Background to see whether your PC uses a picture, slideshow, Windows Spotlight, or a theme. The right place to look depends on that setting—and on whether you want the original image or just the image currently shown on the desktop.
Check which background mode Windows is using
Open Settings > Personalization > Background. Microsoft lists Picture, Slideshow, and Windows Spotlight as background options for Windows 10 and Windows 11. This is the best starting point because each mode gets its images differently. Microsoft’s background settings guide shows the available choices and how to change them.
Find a picture you selected yourself
If Background is set to Picture, Windows displays the image you chose; it does not mean the original was moved to a universal wallpaper folder. Look in the folder where you saved or selected the file. If you no longer remember that location, use the Background settings page to choose a replacement or inspect the available background controls; the desktop alone does not reveal where the original file lives.
Find a wallpaper supplied by a Windows theme
A theme can specify its wallpaper in a .theme configuration file. Microsoft documents user theme files in %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsThemes. Open a relevant .theme file in a text editor and look for its Wallpaper entry to see the configured image path.

Microsoft’s theme-file documentation gives %WinDir%webwallpaperWindowsimg0.jpg as an example. That is an example path, not a guarantee that every PC or theme uses that file. See Microsoft’s Theme File Format documentation for the wallpaper field and file locations.
Find the source folder for a slideshow
A slideshow uses images from a folder you select. Check Settings > Personalization > Background and review the slideshow configuration to identify its source folder. The folder may contain many images; the one currently displayed is only one item in that collection. A cached display image is not a substitute for the original slideshow folder.

Where Windows Spotlight images are stored
Windows Spotlight rotates images, but Microsoft’s Spotlight documentation does not specify one universal local folder for its image assets. The exact behavior can also depend on Windows updates: Microsoft notes that after installing KB5046633 on October 22, 2024, the default wallpaper changes to Windows Spotlight, and its configuration guidance also refers to KB5048652 from December 10, 2024. So the default and behavior should not be assumed identical across every installation. See Microsoft’s Windows Spotlight configuration guidance.
Community discussions mention places such as HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop and cached image files as possible clues. Those reports are anecdotal: a registry value or cache may not identify the original image for every Windows version or background mode. Treat such locations as build- and mode-dependent leads, not a dependable source folder. A Microsoft Community discussion describes this kind of approach, but it is not a universal Microsoft guarantee.

Original wallpaper versus the image currently displayed
- Original file: For a personal picture or slideshow, look at the file or folder you selected. For a theme, inspect the theme’s
Wallpaperentry. - Current desktop image: The background setting identifies the mode, but Spotlight and slideshow may rotate through images. A displayed or cached copy may not be the original source.
- Windows-supplied theme image: Use the path specified by the theme rather than assuming Microsoft’s example path applies to your PC.
For broader theme setup and sharing details, see Microsoft’s guide to personalizing Windows with themes. Microsoft’s background guide covers Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
