Neither browser is a universal winner: the available evidence does not establish that one is categorically faster, safer or more private.
The title’s 2025 date is not a reliable snapshot of what each browser offered that year. This comparison uses features documented on rolling product pages checked on October 8, 2026; Opera’s comparison page says its information was current as of January 2026. Treat feature availability as current documentation, not a verified historical 2025 record.
Opera vs. Edge at a glance
| What matters to you | Opera | Microsoft Edge |
|---|---|---|
| Browser VPN | Documents an optional VPN that routes browser connections through a VPN server and offers broad virtual-location choices. It does not protect every app on your device. Opera VPN details | Opera’s comparison page reports that Edge Secure Network has a 5 GB monthly cap and requires a Microsoft account. Because that is vendor comparison information, check current Microsoft terms, availability and geographic limits before relying on it. Opera’s comparison |
| Privacy controls | Documents an optional tracker blocker. Sync users can also choose a personal passphrase to encrypt all synchronized data. Opera features Opera sync help | Offers Basic, Balanced and Strict tracking-prevention levels, InPrivate browsing and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. These features do not, by themselves, establish an overall privacy or security ranking. Edge features |
| Sync | Supported data varies by browser and device. Desktop and Android users can sync passwords; Opera Mini supports fewer data categories. Opera sync details | After signing in with the same Microsoft account on devices, Edge can sync favorites, passwords and other data. Microsoft Edge sync help |
| Extensions | Has an add-ons catalog; confirm that a specific extension works with your browser and platform. Opera add-ons | Has its own Add-ons store and can import certain Chrome extensions, with permission, when an extension is unavailable there. Availability and behavior still depend on the individual extension. Microsoft extension help |
| Reading and organization | Its feature set includes browser-specific tools; check the product documentation for availability on your platform. Opera features | Documents Immersive Reader and Collections for supported sites and organizing web content. Edge features |
| Speed, memory and battery | Opera says Tab Snoozing pauses inactive tabs to reduce memory use; that is a feature description, not a head-to-head test. Opera features | No current matched Opera-versus-Edge test establishes a speed, memory or battery-life winner. |
Which browser has better privacy and security?
Both provide privacy-related controls, but they work differently. Opera documents an optional tracker blocker and browser VPN. Edge lets you select Basic, Balanced or Strict tracking prevention and includes InPrivate browsing. Microsoft also describes Defender SmartScreen as a feature that helps identify suspicious sites and downloads. These product features are not a complete independent assessment of either browser’s privacy or security.
What Opera’s VPN does—and does not do
Opera describes its VPN as routing browser connections through a VPN server and allowing broad virtual-location choices. Its scope is the browser: do not assume that it protects traffic from other apps, games or services on your device. If you need device-wide coverage, check the scope and terms of the service you are considering rather than treating a browser feature as a system-wide VPN.

How Edge handles tracking and imported data
Edge’s tracking-prevention choices are Basic, Balanced and Strict. The stronger setting may affect how some sites behave, so the practical choice is the one that fits your privacy preference while allowing the sites you use to work. Microsoft says imported data remains local unless users take specific actions—such as enabling sync or a personalization setting—that send data to Microsoft. Microsoft’s explanation of imported data
What the available mobile privacy tests show
A UK government browser-comparison appendix reports PrivacyTests.org results retrieved on September 17, 2024: Edge passed 32 Android tests and 36 iOS tests; Opera passed 33 Android tests and 41 iOS tests. These are counts of tests passed—not percentages, security certifications or current overall privacy scores. The figures concern named mobile browsers at that retrieval date, not desktop versions, and should not be read as a 2025 ranking. UK government browser comparison appendix

How sync differs across devices
Opera
Opera’s sync capabilities depend on the product and device. Its documentation says computer and Android users can sync passwords, while Opera Mini supports fewer categories. A personal passphrase is available to encrypt all synchronized data. Check the sync options for the particular Opera browser you use before relying on it to carry a specific type of information between devices. Opera sync details Opera sync help
Edge
Edge sync requires signing in with the same Microsoft account on each device. Microsoft lists favorites, passwords and other information among the data that can sync. If you already use a Microsoft account across devices, that may make Edge the more convenient choice; review the browser’s sync settings before enabling categories you do not want synchronized. Extensions: check the add-on you actually need
Both browsers have extension catalogs, but that does not mean every extension is available or behaves identically in both. Edge can import certain Chrome extensions with permission when they are not in the Edge Add-ons store. Before switching, search for your essential extensions in the destination browser’s catalog and confirm the listing supports your platform and browser version. Consider the permissions each extension requests as well as its availability.
Is Opera or Edge faster or lighter?
The evidence here does not establish a current, matched comparison of Opera and Edge for page speed, memory use or battery life. Opera describes Tab Snoozing as pausing inactive tabs to reduce memory use, but that description does not show how Opera compares with Edge under the same workload, device, settings and browser versions. Choose based on features and ecosystem rather than an unsupported speed claim.

- Choose Opera if its browser-level VPN, tracker blocker, sync options or interface tools fit your routine. Remember that its VPN covers browser connections, not every app on the device.
- Choose Edge if Microsoft account sync, SmartScreen, configurable tracking prevention, or integration with Windows and other Microsoft services is a priority.
- Try both on your actual devices if your main concern is speed, memory or battery life; the available evidence does not provide a current matched test to settle those questions.
