That two-way behavior lets piezoelectric components act as sensors, receivers, actuators, and transmitters.
How does the piezoelectric effect work?
In a piezoelectric material, mechanical stress shifts the material’s internal charge distribution. When positive and negative charge centers move relative to one another, the material develops electrical polarization. With suitable electrodes and a connected circuit, that polarization can be detected as an electrical signal.
The structural condition matters: piezoelectricity occurs in materials whose crystal structure is non-centrosymmetric, meaning it has no center of inversion symmetry. IEEE Technology Navigator states that 21 of the 32 crystal point groups are non-centrosymmetric and that 20 of those exhibit piezoelectricity. That classification does not mean every crystal in those groups is suitable for a practical component.
IEEE describes the direct-effect relationship in simplified form as P = dT, where polarization P responds to stress T. The converse relationship is S = dE, where strain S responds to electric field E. These compact expressions omit the directional and device-specific details needed for design: the piezoelectric coefficient is a tensor, so response depends on the material’s orientation and the direction of stress or field. The often-cited d33 coefficient denotes a particular same-axis response.

What is the difference between the direct and converse effects?
| Mode | Input | Output | Typical role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct effect | Mechanical stress or acoustic pressure | Electrical polarization or a measurable electrical signal | Sensor or receiver |
| Converse effect | Applied electric field or voltage | Mechanical strain or motion | Actuator or transmitter |
The direct and converse effects are two operating directions of the same electromechanical coupling. They do not guarantee that a material will produce a large voltage or a useful amount of motion in every setup: geometry, orientation, electrodes, mechanical loading, drive conditions, and signal conditioning all affect the device’s behavior.
Which materials are piezoelectric?
Quartz, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) illustrate different material options. The example coefficient values below are those stated by IEEE Technology Navigator; the inspected pages provide no publication year or measurement conditions for them, so they are examples rather than engineering specifications.

- This Ceramic Piezo Vibration Piece Sensor buffers a piezoelectric transducer that responds to strain changes by generating a measurable output voltage change which is proportional with the strength of vibration. So you can know the extent of vibration. Different from digital vibration sensor that only accounts times, this analog one can tell extent of vibration.

| Material | IEEE-stated example | Common use or characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz | Approximately 2.3 pC/N for the example d11 coefficient | Frequency references |
| PZT (lead zirconate titanate) | Representative d33 values of 300–700 pC/N | Sensors, actuators, and ultrasonic transducers |
| PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) | Not stated by IEEE Technology Navigator | Flexible piezoelectric polymer for applications where flexibility matters |
Coefficients from different materials are not interchangeable. An actual selection requires the specific grade, axis, temperature, and measurement conditions from an applicable standard or primary material datasheet.
Where is piezoelectricity used?
Because the direct effect turns mechanical input into an electrical response, and the converse effect turns an electrical drive into motion, piezoelectric elements appear in a range of sensing and motion-control applications. IEEE Technology Navigator describes examples including:

- Precision actuators and positioning: an applied field produces small, controlled strain.
A piezoelectric disc transducer is one common component form: IEEE describes conventional transducers that use a disk or plate as the active element. The component category alone does not specify a finished device’s performance.

- Piezoelectricity: mechanical stress produces electrical polarization; an electric field can also produce strain.
- Piezoresistivity: strain changes a material’s electrical resistance.
- Pyroelectricity: a temperature change causes a change in polarization.
These terms describe different physical responses, even though several can involve electrical measurements or changing conditions in a material.
