Windows 11 has built-in tools for three different RAM checks: Task Manager shows memory use, Windows Memory Diagnostic checks for errors, and WinSAT measures memory bandwidth. Choose the check that matches your question; a clean error test does not measure speed, and a bandwidth score does not rule out faulty RAM.

Check how much RAM Windows is using

Use Task Manager while reproducing the slowdown or workload you want to understand. A reading taken when the PC is idle may not reflect what happens with your usual apps, browser tabs, or project files open.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance, then Memory to view system memory use and the memory details Windows reports.
  3. To see which apps and processes are consuming memory, select Processes and inspect the Memory column.

Task Manager is a Windows system monitor for performance and resource consumption, including memory use. See Microsoft’s guide to system configuration tools. Microsoft also recommends reviewing the Processes, Performance, and Startup apps views when looking for components using high resources in its Windows performance guidance.

High memory use by itself does not prove that RAM is faulty. Look at whether the reading stays high during the workload, which processes are using memory, and whether the PC is actually slowing down.

Test RAM for errors with Windows Memory Diagnostic

Windows Memory Diagnostic checks for memory errors. It restarts the PC, so save your work and close open apps before starting.

  1. Search Windows for Windows Memory Diagnostic, or press Windows key+R, enter mdsched, and press Enter.
  2. Select Restart now and check for problems. The PC restarts and the test begins automatically. The default test mix is Standard.
  3. For a longer, more thorough test, press F1 on the diagnostic screen, use the arrow keys to change Test Mix to Extended, then press F10 to apply the setting and continue.
  4. When the test finishes, the PC restarts. Sign in and look for the Windows Memory Diagnostic notification.

If you missed the notification, open Event Viewer and go to Application and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results > Debug. Microsoft identifies Event ID 2001 as meaning that no memory errors were detected in that test. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Memory Diagnostic instructions for the procedure and result location.

G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 RAM (XMP) 16GB (2x8GB) Up to 3200MT/s* CL16-18-18-38 1.35V Intel AMD Desktop Computer Memory U-DIMM - Black (F4-3200C16D-16GVKB)
  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
  • Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and Intel XMP memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

A clean result applies to that test run. It is not a bandwidth score or an absolute guarantee that intermittent memory problems cannot occur.

Measure memory bandwidth with WinSAT

WinSAT’s mem assessment measures system memory bandwidth using a process similar to large memory-to-memory buffer copies. It does not test RAM errors.

  • Compatible with select DDR4 Desktop computers + Easy to install at home, no expertise required
  • Maximize your system's performance, boost loading speeds and multitask with ease
  • Backed by A-Tech's Lifetime Warranty + Friendly tech support team available to help before and after your purchase
  • 16GB RAM Kit ( 2 x 8GB Modules ) | DDR4 DIMM 288-Pin | Speeds up to 2666MHz (2667MHz), PC4-21300 / PC4-2666V
  • NON-ECC Unbuffered | 1Rx8 or 2Rx8 - Single or Dual Rank | JEDEC DDR4 standard 1.2V
  1. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
  2. Run winsat mem.
  3. Record the displayed result, the command used, and the system configuration if you plan to compare repeat runs.

Microsoft documents optional parameters such as -up, which forces one test thread, and -nc, which requests uncached memory allocation for copy operations. These change test conditions, so avoid using them unless you understand the effect. The Microsoft WinSAT mem command reference describes the test but sets no universal pass mark for a good or bad result.

For a meaningful comparison, use the same PC, WinSAT parameters, and similar background workload for each run. Results from different systems or settings are not a controlled head-to-head comparison.

Understand whether capacity may be part of the problem

Memory use and bandwidth are not the same as capacity. Microsoft explains that RAM is faster to read and write than disk, and that more memory can let a device do more simultaneously without slowdowns. Its broad guidance is at least 4 GB for basic browsing, documents, and streaming; 8 GB as a long-term recommendation; and 16 GB or more for photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. These are general recommendations, not a diagnosis for a particular PC or workload. See Microsoft’s overview of computer memory.

Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum Windows 11 system requirement. That eligibility minimum does not mean 4 GB is sufficient for every use. Before considering an upgrade, confirm that your specific PC supports the memory type, capacity, and configuration you intend to install; some PCs below the minimum may have upgrade options. See Windows 11 system requirements.

Choose the right test for the question

What you want to know Use What the result tells you
Which apps are using memory, or whether use rises during a slowdown Task Manager > Performance > Memory; check Processes for per-app use Current memory use and the processes consuming it
Whether Windows detects memory errors Windows Memory Diagnostic Whether errors were detected during that test run
Memory bandwidth Administrator Command Prompt or Terminal: winsat mem A bandwidth assessment under the command’s test conditions

Keep these results separate: an error finding and a bandwidth number measure different things and cannot be ranked on one scale. For troubleshooting, compare the same everyday workload and note memory use, available memory, the processes consuming it, and whether the slowdown occurs.
