To present PowerPoint on Zoom, start the slide show and share either its window or the monitor displaying it. With one monitor, set PowerPoint to run the slide show in a window, then share that window. With two monitors, share the slide-show display and keep Presenter View—with your notes—on the other screen.
Choose the sharing method for your setup
| Setup | What to share in Zoom | Notes and meeting controls |
|---|---|---|
| One monitor, meeting controls available | The PowerPoint slide-show window, after setting the show to run in a window | Zoom says this lets you access meeting features such as chat and participant management while sharing. Zoom’s PowerPoint sharing instructions |
| Two monitors, private notes | The monitor showing the slide show | Keep Presenter View on the other monitor. Microsoft describes this as a way to see speaker notes on the presenter’s computer while the audience sees only the slides. Microsoft: Present your slide show |
| One monitor, full-screen show | The full monitor | Everything that appears on the shared monitor may be visible to participants; check the share preview before switching apps or opening notifications. Zoom’s PowerPoint sharing instructions |
Present from one monitor and keep Zoom controls available
- Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
- On the Slide Show tab, select Set Up Slide Show.
- Under Show type, select Browsed by an individual (window), then confirm.
- Start the slide show from the beginning or from the current slide.
- Start or join your Zoom meeting and select Share Screen.
- Choose the PowerPoint slide-show window—not the entire desktop or monitor—and select Share.
- Check Zoom’s share indicator or preview to make sure the slide show is the content being shared.
This is the practical one-monitor choice when you want to reach Zoom chat or participant management during the presentation. Menu wording can vary by PowerPoint version and operating system. Zoom’s instructions for sharing a PowerPoint presentation describe the windowed approach.
Present with two monitors and keep notes private
- Open the presentation and start or join your Zoom meeting.
- In Zoom, select Share Screen, choose the monitor where PowerPoint opens, and click Share.
- In PowerPoint, open the Slide Show tab and start the show from the beginning or current slide.
- Keep Presenter View on the other monitor. Use it for speaker notes and slide controls while participants see the slide-show display.
- Confirm that Zoom is sharing the monitor displaying the slides. If it is sharing the wrong display, use Zoom’s Swap Displays option or stop sharing and select the slide-show display.
Presenter View separates the presenter’s notes from the audience-facing slides when the correct displays are used. See Microsoft’s Presenter View instructions and Zoom’s dual-monitor sharing instructions. The exact menus may differ across desktop versions and operating systems.
Use full-screen sharing on one monitor
If you prefer not to configure a windowed show, share your monitor in Zoom first, switch to PowerPoint, and start the slide show full screen. This can work, but the shared area is the whole selected monitor rather than just the PowerPoint window. Use Zoom’s preview to check what participants will see before opening other apps or allowing notifications to appear.

Add presenter video or use slides as a virtual background
Zoom offers presenter layouts that can show shared content alone, put the presenter’s video over the content, place content over the presenter’s shoulder, or show video and content side by side. Availability can depend on account-administrator settings and the sharing option. Zoom says these layouts are not supported in cloud recordings or live streaming; its documented computer-recording support requires Zoom desktop app version 6.3.0 or higher. Check the current requirements in Zoom’s presenter-layout guidance before relying on a layout for a recording or broadcast.
Zoom also documents sharing slides as a virtual background with the desktop app and locally installed PowerPoint or Keynote. Some viewers—including people using the Web client, a Zoom Room, or a third-party endpoint—may see a regular screen share instead of the presenter overlaid on the slides. Local and cloud recording results can differ. See Zoom’s virtual-background slide-sharing instructions.

Participants can see your speaker notes
With two monitors, make sure Zoom is sharing the slide-show display—not the monitor showing Presenter View. Keep notes on the other display and verify the shared content before continuing.
