If you see HTTP 418 while signing in to the Hugging Face website, there is no verified universal fix: the status alone does not identify why Hugging Face returned it. If the problem is with the command-line interface (CLI), check which account it recognizes with hf auth whoami, then use hf auth login --force to sign in again. These are separate cases, so CLI token steps should not be treated as a proven fix for a browser error.
First, identify where the error appears

HTTP 418 is labeled “I’m a teapot,” a status description associated with the Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol joke. That general label does not establish whether a particular Hugging Face response came from an account check, an application component, or another service layer. It is not evidence by itself of a bad token, VPN block, Cloudflare block, or permanent account restriction. See MDN’s HTTP 418 reference.
Fix a Hugging Face CLI authentication problem
Check which account the CLI recognizes
- Open a terminal where the Hugging Face CLI is installed.
- Run
hf auth whoami. - Compare the username and organizations shown with the account you intended to use. Hugging Face documents this command for checking the active Hub login. See the Hub quick-start login guide.
Sign in again
- Run
hf auth login --forceto force a fresh login. Hugging Face documents--forcefor re-login, including when switching tokens. - Follow the CLI’s sign-in flow. The documented flow can authorize through a browser URL and short code, or accept a User Access Token.
- Run
hf auth whoamiagain to confirm the account the CLI recognizes.

If the CLI still seems to use the old account
Check whether HF_TOKEN is set in your environment or supplied as a configured secret. Hugging Face says an environment variable or secret takes precedence over the token saved locally. As a result, replacing the locally saved token may not change the credential used by a command. Check the environment or secret configuration used by the process running the CLI, then verify the recognized account with hf auth whoami. Use permissions appropriate to the Hub task
Hugging Face User Access Tokens can have read or write permissions. Use read access when the task only requires reading; creating or editing a repository requires write permission. Permission choice matters for Hub operations, but does not explain or diagnose a browser sign-in 418. See the Hub quick-start guide.

The available Hugging Face documentation does not establish a specific cause or universal remedy for a website sign-in response of 418. A user report described a sign-up error with the text “Error 418, contact support,” but that is an individual anecdote, not a confirmed diagnosis or reproducible fix: the reported sign-up issue.

If the error persists, contact Hugging Face support and include details that can help them investigate the specific response:
- The exact page URL where it occurs.
- The time it happened, including your time zone.
- The full response text or a screenshot with sensitive information removed.
- Whether it also happens in another browser session or on another network.
These are troubleshooting details to provide, not steps guaranteed to clear the error. Avoid assuming that changing a CLI token, disabling a VPN, or waiting a set amount of time will fix the website response; the available sources do not establish those as causes or remedies.
