If your iPhone keeps restarting, first back it up if it stays on long enough. Then identify what is happening: repeated restarts, one unexpected shutdown, a frozen or black screen, an Apple logo with no progress bar, or a “Connect to computer” screen. Those symptoms call for different steps; a force restart may help an unresponsive phone, but it does not diagnose or guarantee a fix for a recurring restart loop.
First, identify the restart pattern and protect your data
Note when the problem began and what happened just before it: an iOS update, a new app, charging, a drop or liquid exposure, or very hot or cold conditions. If the phone is usable, record its model and iOS version too. These are clues for troubleshooting, not proof of a cause.
Back up the iPhone while it is stable enough to use. Apple supports backups to iCloud or to a computer; start from its iPhone Support hub for the relevant instructions. Avoid erasing or restoring the phone until you understand the data-loss risk.
- Repeated restarts: The phone reaches the Home Screen or begins starting up, then restarts again.
- Unexpected shutdown: It turns off, perhaps when the charge is low or the phone is cold, but does not necessarily repeat the full startup cycle.
- Frozen or black screen: The phone is unresponsive or appears not to turn on.
- Apple logo without a progress bar, or a “Connect to computer” screen: Recovery-mode troubleshooting may be appropriate.
- Progress bar during an update, restore, or erase: This is an operation in progress, not necessarily a restart loop. Do not interrupt it just because the bar seems slow or still.
If the iPhone is frozen or unresponsive, force-restart it
A force restart is intended for an iPhone that is frozen or not responding. It is not the same as a diagnosis, and it may not stop a problem that keeps returning.

iPhone models with Face ID
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Button combinations differ on iPhone 7 and earlier models. Find your model’s sequence in Apple’s Restart an unresponsive iPhone instructions instead of trying the Face ID sequence on every iPhone. If the phone still will not turn on, Apple advises charging it and trying again; service may be needed if it remains unresponsive.
If it stays on, check for an iOS update
When the iPhone remains usable, check whether an iOS update is available and install it if appropriate. Apple says an update might fix an issue; it is not a guaranteed cure for repeated restarts. Back up first if you can. Apple’s iPhone Support hub links to update and backup guidance.

If you are updating or restoring through a computer and encounter an error, check that the computer’s software is current and that the connection is sound. For an error pointing to a connection problem, connect directly to a USB port and consider another Apple-certified cable or port. The connector needed depends on the iPhone generation and the computer; a cable is only a connection aid, not a fix for a restart loop by itself. See Apple’s iOS update and restore errors guidance.
Use recovery mode only when the symptoms fit
Recovery mode is for specific startup or recovery problems. Apple identifies situations such as an Apple logo remaining on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, a computer reporting that the iPhone is in recovery mode or not recognizing it, a “Connect to computer” screen, or Recovery Assistant repeatedly failing to recover the device.

- Use an updated Mac with Finder or a PC with the Apple Devices app, and connect the iPhone to the computer.
- Follow Apple’s model-specific button instructions to put the iPhone into recovery mode. The sequence varies by model, so use Apple’s update and restore instructions.
- If the computer offers Update or Restore, try Update first when appropriate. Update attempts to reinstall iOS without choosing the erase option.
- Choose Restore only if you understand that it reinstalls iOS and erases the iPhone’s data. Back up first whenever the phone can still be backed up.
Do not disconnect or interrupt an update, restore, or erase just because its progress bar moves slowly or appears static. Apple’s guidance for a progress bar is at If your iPhone or iPad is stuck on the Apple logo; follow its instructions for the situation shown on your screen.
Consider battery and temperature as clues, not a diagnosis
A low charge, a chemically aged battery, or cold conditions can contribute to an unexpected shutdown. Apple explains that an aged battery can have greater impedance and may not supply the peak power the iPhone needs. iOS may then shut the device down to protect its components. Apple notes, “While this shutdown is intentional from the device perspective, it might be unexpected by the user.” That describes one battery-related shutdown mechanism; it does not establish that a particular restart loop is caused by the battery. Apple’s published ambient operating range is 0–35 °C (32–95 °F); its storage range is −20–45 °C (−4–113 °F). Very cold use can temporarily shorten battery life and cause the phone to turn off. If the iPhone is unusually hot, move it out of direct sunlight or a hot environment and let it cool. Some warmth during tasks such as updating, restoring, or wireless charging can be normal. Contact Apple or an Apple-authorized service provider if recovery mode cannot update or restore the iPhone, a button is broken or stuck, the device remains unresponsive, or the restarting continues after reasonable software troubleshooting. Apple’s support hub provides service and repair options. Diagnosis, price, and availability depend on the device and location; the symptoms alone cannot establish what repair is needed.
