To give one person a distinctive call sound, open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, tap Ringtone, and choose a sound. To change that person’s message alert instead, select Text Tone on the same contact card.
Assign a ringtone to one contact
- Open Contacts on your iPhone.
- Select the contact whose calls you want to identify.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Choose the ringtone you want, then tap Done to save the contact. Apple documents this path in its iPhone User Guide.
Choose the right sound setting
For calls from one person
Use Ringtone in that person’s contact card. It changes the sound associated with calls from that contact, not the ringtone for every caller.
For messages from one person
Open the contact’s editing screen and choose Text Tone to set that person’s message alert. Apple treats Ringtone and Text Tone as separate contact settings.
For calls from everyone
To change the phone-wide default instead, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and select a sound. That setting is separate from the ringtone assigned to an individual contact.

Use a custom ringtone
Apple’s GarageBand workflow lets you create a ringtone on iPhone from an audio file, a song in your Apple Music library, or a song you made. You can choose an excerpt up to 30 seconds long. A track that is dimmed because it is protected or has not been downloaded cannot be used as the source. See Apple’s instructions for creating a ringtone in GarageBand.
- Create and export the ringtone in GarageBand.
- When prompted after sharing, choose Use sound as, then Assign to contact.
- Select the contact. You can also assign the exported sound by editing the contact and choosing Ringtone.
GarageBand may request permission to access Contacts when you assign a created sound to a person.

Buy a ringtone from the Tone Store
If you prefer to purchase a tone, Apple lists the path as Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtones > Tone Store. Purchases are associated with the Apple Account and payment method on file.
