For a Mini-ITX PC build, choose the case first, then check every part against that case’s exact clearances and layout. The motherboard’s small size does not make the GPU, cooler, power supply, or cables small enough to fit automatically. A compatibility-first plan helps you avoid parts that collide, restrict airflow, or cannot be connected.

Start with the case and your build priorities

Decide what matters most: the smallest enclosure, gaming performance, low noise, portability, storage capacity, appearance, front-panel connections, or easier upgrades. These goals can conflict. A very compact layout may leave less room for a tall cooler or thick graphics card; a larger compact case may offer more flexibility.

Case volume alone does not tell you how well a PC will cool. Ventilation, fan placement, component layout, and cable routing all matter. Intel recommends beginning with the case because it dictates the space available for the rest of the build. See Intel’s small form factor gaming PC guidance.

Before buying components, find the specification sheet and manual for the exact case model and revision. Record its supported motherboard sizes, GPU limits, cooler height, radiator positions, PSU format and length, storage mounts, fan locations, and any included PCIe riser. If support depends on a particular configuration or removable part, note that too.

Choose a motherboard and platform that match

Mini-ITX is a common choice for small-form-factor desktops, but select the CPU platform before settling on a motherboard. Confirm the CPU socket, chipset, memory generation, BIOS and CPU support, and the connections you need. Compare the exact board’s M.2 slots and their locations, networking, USB, audio, and expansion options.

Mini-ITX boards have less room for expansion than larger boards. A graphics card may occupy the main full-size PCIe slot, so do not assume there is room for additional expansion cards. Check the motherboard’s external dimensions and layout against the case rather than relying on the words “Mini-ITX compatible” alone.

Check the entire graphics-card envelope

Compare the precise GPU model’s dimensions with the case manual or diagram. Length is only one part of fit: thickness, slot count, orientation, bracket dimensions, power-connector position, and cable bend clearance can all matter. A card shorter than the case’s stated maximum length can still be too thick or leave no room to connect its power cable.

  • Check the card’s length, width or thickness, and slot requirement.
  • Allow for the bracket and power connector, which may not be included in a published dimension or case allowance.
  • Check whether the card’s orientation or nearby PSU, radiator, fans, or cables changes the usable space.
  • Leave room for airflow where the layout allows.

Use the GPU manufacturer’s specifications and the case maker’s documentation for the exact models. Intel’s SFF guidance and MSI’s case guidance both emphasize that connectors and layout can affect fit: Intel and MSI.

Match the PSU’s size, capacity, and connectors

Power-supply choice has two separate checks: physical fit and electrical suitability. Match the PSU format and length to the case, then confirm its capacity and connectors for the chosen CPU, GPU, and other components. Do not assume every Mini-ITX system requires an SFX power supply.

Case support varies. Fractal Design lists SFX and SFX-L support for the Ridge, while MSI lists ATX PSU support for its PRO FORGE M050A. Those are examples of different case designs, not a general rule for Mini-ITX builds. The M050A specification lists a maximum PSU length of 170 mm. Check the exact case and PSU documentation before ordering.

Broad wattage examples for general PC classes are not a substitute for the specific GPU’s requirements and a whole-system estimate. Check the graphics-card maker’s power guidance, ensure the PSU has the required connectors, and leave room for the connectors and cables inside the enclosure.

Fit CPU cooling, memory, and airflow together

Air coolers

Confirm the cooler supports your CPU socket and does not exceed the case’s maximum cooler height. Also check clearance around memory modules, motherboard heatsinks, and the side panel. A low-profile cooler or low-profile RAM may be necessary in some layouts, but the exact case and motherboard determine whether it is.

Liquid cooling

If using a liquid cooler, verify the supported radiator size and its permitted mounting position. Then account for radiator and fan thickness and check for interference with the GPU, PSU, and other fans. A case’s stated radiator support does not guarantee that every radiator, fan, and component combination fits together.

Airflow and cable routing

Plan where air enters and exits, where fans can be installed, and how you will access dust filters. Dense component layouts make cable routing especially important: poorly routed cables can obstruct airflow or prevent a panel from closing. Do not rely on a case’s compact dimensions to predict temperatures or noise; those outcomes depend on the complete configuration and workload.

Plan memory and storage around the board

Memory

Check the motherboard’s memory type, supported capacity and speed, and number of slots. Many Mini-ITX boards have two DIMM slots, so choose capacity with your upgrade plans in mind. Where appropriate for the platform, a matched dual-channel kit avoids relying on a single stick simply to leave a slot open. Confirm the board’s supported memory configuration and any cooler clearance limits.

Storage

M.2 drives can reduce data and power cabling, which is useful in a crowded enclosure. Check how many M.2 slots the board has, the supported drive length and interface, and whether a heatsink or rear-mounted position creates a cooling concern. If you choose 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA storage, verify that the case has a mounting point and that its data and power cables will not obstruct other components.

Check risers and case-specific details

Some compact cases use a PCIe riser to connect a graphics card. If yours does, check the included riser’s generation and follow the case manufacturer’s setup instructions; advice for one case or riser is not automatically appropriate for another.

For the Ridge, Fractal Design’s support page identifies the included riser as PCIe 4.0. It recommends setting the slot to PCIe 4.0 for stability in the specific scenario where both the GPU and motherboard support PCIe 5.0. The page also discusses past riser incompatibilities and a revised riser supplied to affected users, so consult the current support information for your exact unit: Fractal Design Ridge support (modified 2025-02-11).

Use a case-specific compatibility checklist

Before placing an order, compare the actual component models—not just product families—against the case documentation. A simple checklist makes missing measurements easier to spot.

  • Motherboard: supported form factor, board dimensions, socket, BIOS and CPU support, memory type, and required connections.
  • GPU: length, thickness, slot count, bracket, connector position, power cable clearance, and orientation.
  • CPU cooling: cooler height or radiator size and position, socket support, fan thickness, and clearance around RAM and motherboard heatsinks.
  • PSU: supported format, maximum length, electrical capacity, required connectors, and cable space.
  • Memory and storage: supported specifications, slot count, drive dimensions, heatsinks, storage mounts, and cable routes.
  • Case layout: fan positions, airflow path, front I/O, dust access, assembly access, riser requirements, and upgrade needs.

For example, MSI’s official PRO FORGE M050A specification lists Mini-ITX and Micro-ATX motherboard support, ATX PSU support, a maximum GPU length of 300 mm, a maximum cooler height of 160 mm, and a maximum PSU length of 170 mm. These measurements apply to that particular mini-tower case; they are not universal Mini-ITX limits. Verify the current specification for the exact model at MSI’s PRO FORGE M050A specification page.

Assemble and validate the build

  1. Review the manuals. Follow the instructions for the case, motherboard, CPU cooler, GPU, and PSU. Confirm any configuration-specific fit or connection requirements before installing parts.
  2. Plan the installation order. In a tight enclosure, decide how cables will be routed and which parts are easier to install before securing the motherboard or GPU. Keep panels off until connections and routing are checked.
  3. Install and connect carefully. Confirm that components are seated and secured, power cables are fully connected, and cables are not trapped or blocking fans.
  4. Configure any riser as directed. Use the case maker’s instructions for the included riser and any required firmware or slot setting.
  5. Check operation before regular use. Confirm the system boots, detects its components, and runs its fans. Check that temperatures remain appropriate under the workload you intend to run.

Compatibility planning can reduce fit surprises, but it cannot establish the temperatures, acoustics, or performance of an untested combination. Those depend on the exact parts, assembly, settings, and workload.
