The best note-taking app for college depends on how you work: choose Goodnotes for handwriting and PDF annotation, OneNote for traditional class notebooks across devices, Notion for typed notes tied to coursework, Obsidian for linked notes stored as Markdown files, or RemNote for notes that turn into flashcards. There is no universal winner, and the feature descriptions below draw primarily on two Goodnotes-published comparisons—not independent hands-on testing—so treat the vendor’s assessments as guidance, not neutral rankings.

Which app fits your college workflow?

App Best fit Standout workflow Key trade-off
Goodnotes Handwriting, lecture slides, and PDFs Annotate PDFs, draw diagrams, write by hand, and make flashcards or audio-linked lecture notes The free plan has limits, including files, recording length, and cross-platform syncing, according to Goodnotes
Microsoft OneNote Class notebooks and mixed-device study Organize work into notebooks, sections, and pages; share notebooks and clip web content The cited feature description comes from Goodnotes’ roundup; current Microsoft plan details are not established here
Notion Typed notes and course planning Connect lecture notes and readings with assignment trackers, course databases, to-do lists, and calendars It is geared toward typed, structured notes rather than handwriting equations or annotating slides with a stylus
Obsidian Linked notes and local file control Write linked notes saved as Markdown files on your device Cross-device sync is paid, according to Goodnotes; current sync terms are not established here
RemNote Notes and built-in exam review Combine typed notes with flashcards, spaced repetition, and an exam scheduler The free plan has limits on PDF annotation, handwritten documents, and AI credits, according to Goodnotes

These are workflow matches, not results from a comparative performance test. Goodnotes’ Content Team published the descriptions in its 2026 student-app comparison and 2026 iPad-app roundup. Goodnotes has an obvious interest in its own app, so use those sources for feature descriptions rather than treating their rankings as independent evidence.

1. Goodnotes: best for handwriting and annotating course materials

Choose Goodnotes if you regularly write by hand on a tablet, mark up lecture slides, or work through diagrams and equations directly on a page. Goodnotes describes its app as combining handwriting, typed notes, PDF annotation, diagrams, flashcards, and audio-linked lecture notes. That combination can suit a course where the slides are PDFs and your notes need to sit alongside them.

The free plan is positioned as a way to try the core workflow, but Goodnotes says it limits files, recording length, and cross-platform syncing. Its Content Team reported Goodnotes Essential at $11.99 per year in an article published September 11, 2026, and described that plan as including unlimited files, tools, and audio recording. That is a dated vendor-published figure, not a verified live quote; check the current checkout price and terms before paying.

2. Microsoft OneNote: best for class notebooks across devices

OneNote is a practical candidate if you move between an iPad and a Windows computer or your university already uses Microsoft 365. Goodnotes’ roundup describes OneNote’s structure as notebooks, sections, and pages, and highlights web clipping and shared notebooks. That familiar notebook model may work well when you want a separate space for each class and a straightforward way to collect material.

Those details are characterized by Goodnotes, rather than verified here against readable text from Microsoft’s product page. Before committing a semester’s notes, check Microsoft’s current information on OneNote, especially support for your devices, syncing, offline access, and export.

3. Notion: best for typed notes connected to assignments

Pick Notion if you mostly type and want course planning beside your notes. Goodnotes describes a workflow that connects lecture notes and readings to assignment trackers, course databases, to-do lists, and calendars. This can help keep class material and deadlines in one organized workspace, but the same source characterizes Notion as less suited to handwriting equations or annotating slides with a stylus.

Goodnotes’ 2026 comparison reports that Notion Free includes unlimited personal pages and blocks, with a 5 MB per-file upload cap and seven days of page history. Those are dated plan details, not a promise of current limits. Verify the current terms on Notion’s pricing page before building a workflow around file uploads or page history.

4. Obsidian: best for linked notes and local Markdown files

Obsidian may suit you if you prefer typed notes that connect to one another and want your writing saved as Markdown files on your device. Goodnotes describes those local files and linked-note capabilities as central to Obsidian’s approach. That structure can be useful for connecting ideas across lectures, readings, and projects rather than keeping every note isolated in a class notebook.

Goodnotes reports that cross-device Obsidian Sync is paid, but current pricing and terms are not established here. Check Obsidian’s site for current sync details, and decide how you will back up and access your files before relying on them as your only copy.

5. RemNote: best for notes that become flashcards

RemNote is worth considering if you want to make revision materials as you take notes. Goodnotes describes it as combining typed notes, flashcards, spaced repetition, and an exam scheduler. That integration may suit courses that demand regular recall practice; it is a less natural fit if you mainly want a plain notebook or a handwriting-first app.

Goodnotes says RemNote’s free plan includes unlimited notes and flashcards, while limiting PDF annotation, handwritten documents, and AI credits. Check the current plan terms before deciding whether those limits affect your courses.

How to choose before moving a semester of notes

  • Match the input to your classes: If you write equations or sketch diagrams by hand, prioritize stylus support. If you mostly type, OneNote, Notion, Obsidian, or RemNote may fit better. Goodnotes’ Content Team offered similar typed-note guidance in its 2026 student-app comparison.
  • Check how you handle course materials: If you annotate lecture slides, readings, or scans, confirm that the app imports the file types you use and preserves your annotations when you export.
  • Choose an organization style you will keep using: Compare notebooks and sections, folders, tags, databases, backlinks, or search for handwritten notes against the system you already understand.
  • Be realistic about review tools: Built-in flashcards and spaced repetition can help organize revision if you will actually use them. They are not necessary for basic note capture.
  • Test your devices and offline needs: Check support for the exact operating systems you use, how sync works, and whether you can access important class notes without a network connection.
  • Read the limits that matter to you: Free plans may cap files, storage, recording, devices, syncing, or export options. Confirm those ceilings and your ability to move notes out before making an app the home for years of coursework.

When Apple Notes is a better alternative

If you already use Apple devices and want a simpler option, Apple Notes is a credible alternative to the five apps above. Goodnotes’ 2026 comparison describes it as supporting typed and handwritten notes, PDF markup, scanning, audio recording, and iCloud sync. The same source notes it has no native Windows or Android app, which makes it a weaker fit if you need those platforms.

Goodnotes also reported 5 GB of shared iCloud storage in that article. This is dated vendor editorial reporting, not a verified statement of Apple’s current storage policy; check Apple’s current terms before relying on that allowance.

What the comparisons do—and do not—establish

The feature descriptions and plan limits above are attributed to Goodnotes because the readable comparison sources were published by the app vendor. Microsoft, Notion, and Obsidian product pages were listed as opened on October 8, 2026, but their content was unavailable in the source extraction; they are linked here as places to verify current details, not as proof of the specific claims attributed to Goodnotes. The available material does not establish independent survey results about which apps college students use or whether any one app improves grades or study outcomes.
