Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If GRUB stops starting Ubuntu, Boot-Repair-Disk can offer a graphical recovery path: boot the computer from its USB, create a Boot-Info report if you need a diagnosis, then use Recommended Repair for the general repair attempt. It commonly reinstalls GRUB, but it cannot guarantee a fix for every boot failure or disk layout.
What Boot-Repair-Disk can—and cannot—fix
Boot-Repair is an Ubuntu-centered graphical utility for common boot problems. Its Recommended Repair generally reinstalls GRUB to restore access to installed operating systems. The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki describes this as a simple repair route, not a universal solution for every Linux distribution, firmware setup, or disk arrangement. See the Ubuntu Boot-Repair guide for its scope and options.
A grub rescue> prompt is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guide says it appears when GRUB cannot find its GRUB folder, grub.cfg, or related modules. Causes can include an incorrect path, partition or system changes, a failed GRUB update, or an unsuccessful installation. The right recovery depends on where the installed system and GRUB files actually are. See GRUB troubleshooting guidance.
Prepare the repair USB
The Boot-Repair guide documents two routes: make a live USB of Boot-Repair-Disk, which starts Boot-Repair automatically, or run Boot-Repair from an Ubuntu live session. It also describes installing it in a working Ubuntu installation. For a computer that will not boot normally, the live USB route is generally the most direct.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Create the media: Use the Boot-Repair guide’s instructions to create a Boot-Repair-Disk live USB. The guide recommends USB media and cautions against burning the disk to DVD when the computer boots in EFI mode.
- Check firmware mode: Determine whether the computer uses UEFI/EFI or BIOS/legacy boot, and use the firmware’s boot menu to start the USB in the appropriate mode. Do not assume the two modes are interchangeable.
- Prefer compatible media: Ubuntu’s GRUB installation guide recommends live media matching the Ubuntu release or GRUB version installed on the system being repaired, since versions differ. The guide includes historical examples, so do not treat old release-specific instructions as current UI labels. See Ubuntu’s GRUB installation guide.
Run Boot-Repair and attempt the recommended repair
- Start Boot-Repair: Boot from the Boot-Repair-Disk USB. If using an Ubuntu live session instead, launch Boot-Repair from that environment.
- Generate Boot-Info if diagnosis is needed: Create a Boot-Info report before changing the boot setup. The tool lets you keep the report locally or share it online. Review its contents and choose deliberately before sharing.
- Choose Recommended Repair: Use this for the general repair path. The documented behavior is to generally reinstall GRUB; the outcome depends on the underlying failure and the computer’s configuration.
- Reboot and check access: Follow the repair tool’s prompts, restart the computer, and check whether Ubuntu and any other installed operating systems appear and start as expected.
Use advanced settings only with specific guidance
Boot-Repair provides advanced options that affect GRUB installation and other boot parameters. The Ubuntu guide warns that changing these defaults without knowing which setting addresses the problem can make the situation worse. Leave them unchanged unless an experienced helper has reviewed the diagnosis and specifically directs you to alter an option.
If the repair does not restore startup
Do not infer that the menu was rebuilt
Reinstalling GRUB and rebuilding its menu are separate tasks. The Ubuntu installation guide states that grub-install does not generate a new grub.cfg. A successful reinstall alone therefore does not prove that the menu configuration was recreated or corrected.

Get help before running machine-specific terminal commands
Alternatives include GRUB rescue mode and terminal procedures from live media. They require identifying the installed system partition and the disk that should receive GRUB. Those targets vary by computer; copying a drive-specific command without confirming the layout can create further boot problems. If you need guided help, provide a reviewed Boot-Info report using a sharing method you are comfortable with, and explain whether the machine uses UEFI or BIOS/legacy boot.
Interpret a rescue prompt as a clue, not a cause
Manual recovery from grub rescue> involves locating the GRUB files and setting the correct paths; commands can fail until the correct prefix is set. Because paths and partitions depend on the actual layout, a prompt alone is not enough to choose a safe command. Use the GRUB troubleshooting guide or get help based on the machine’s report rather than guessing.
