What WampServer does
WampServer is a Windows-oriented local web-development platform for dynamic applications. Apache serves pages, PHP runs server-side code, and MySQL provides a database. phpMyAdmin is included as a browser-based interface for managing databases. This lets you develop and test a site on your own computer without publishing it to a public web server.
The official WampServer site describes the software as free under the GPL and offers 32-bit and 64-bit versions. It says Wampserver 3 is not compatible with Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008; it does not establish a complete current Windows compatibility list. Check the official product and download page for current installer details before installing: WampServer official site.
Install WampServer and locate the project folder
The installation creates a folder named www. The official instructions give c:\wamp\www as a typical location, but the exact path can differ depending on your installation.

- Download the appropriate WampServer installer from the official site and review its current requirements and instructions.
- Install WampServer, then locate its
wwwfolder on your computer. - Create a separate subfolder inside
wwwfor your project, such asmy-site. - Put the project’s PHP files and other site files in that project subfolder.
- Start or check the Apache and MySQL services using the WampServer tray icon.
Open your local website
To see the WampServer landing page, open http://localhost in a browser. To open a project saved in a subfolder, use its folder name after localhost—for example, http://localhost/my-site/ for a project folder named my-site. If your project has an index page, the server will normally serve it when you open the folder URL.
If the page does not load, check the tray icon and confirm that Apache is running. WampServer’s official instructions also point to its menu for service controls, logs and configuration files; the log files can help identify a startup or configuration problem. The site does not document a universal remedy for every error, so use the specific message and relevant log rather than changing settings at random.

Use the tray menu to manage the local stack
The WampServer tray icon is the main control point for the local services. According to the official product page, its menu can be used to:
- Manage Apache and MySQL services and switch between online and offline modes.
- Install or change Apache, MySQL and PHP versions.
- Open server settings, configuration files and logs.
- Create aliases for local sites.
For a basic project, the www folder and localhost workflow are enough to get started. Version switching, configuration changes and aliases are useful when a project needs a particular local setup; make changes deliberately and consult the application’s own requirements.

Check component versions before installing
The official page’s version listing, captured in a search result about 10 months before October 8, 2026, showed WampServer 64-bit 3.3.7 with Apache 2.4.62.1, PHP 7.4.33, 8.0.30, 8.1.31, 8.2.26, 8.3.14 and 8.4.0, MySQL 9.1.0, MariaDB 11.5.2, phpMyAdmin 5.2.1, Adminer 4.8.4 and PhpSysInfo 3.4.4. Those are versions listed in that page snapshot, not a guarantee of what is available now. Check the live official download page before choosing an installer or relying on a component version.
Match the PHP and database versions to the application you intend to run. The official page provides WampServer’s bundled components and tools, but does not establish a complete current Windows support matrix or current installer prerequisites.
