To retrieve the network adapter MAC addresses reported by a remote Windows PC, open Command Prompt and run getmac /s <computer-name-or-IP>. Microsoft documents this command for Windows 10 and Windows 11. You need authorization and an account the remote query can use.
Run getmac against the remote computer
- Open Command Prompt on your Windows PC.
- Enter
getmac /s <computer-name-or-IP>, replacing the bracketed text with the remote computer’s name or IP address. Do not include the angle brackets or prefix the address with backslashes. For example:getmac /s PC-NAME. - Press Enter. The default output is a table showing MAC addresses and associated network protocols for the remote computer’s network cards. Microsoft’s getmac command reference documents this syntax and applies it to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
The command is for querying network cards on a computer across a network; it is not a way to discover every device on the network.
Specify an account or change the output format
If the query needs a particular account, add /u and its username:
getmac /s PC-NAME /u CONTOSOAlice
Microsoft also documents /p for supplying the password for that account. Avoid typing a reusable password directly into a command, where it may be recorded in shell history or process logs. Use your organization’s approved credential-handling method instead.

Use these documented options to format or expand the output:
/fo table,/fo list, or/fo csvselects table, list, or CSV format. Table is the default./nhsuppresses column headers with table or CSV output./vrequests verbose output.

The second command is a syntax example, not a recommendation to expose a password in the command text.
How getmac differs from arp -a

systeminfo /s <computer> can query broad system configuration information remotely, but getmac is the direct documented command for remote MAC addresses. Microsoft’s systeminfo reference describes its broader purpose.

Troubleshoot a failed remote query
Microsoft documents the command syntax and account parameters, but does not provide a universal firewall or remote-management checklist for every environment. If the command fails, check:
- The computer name or IP address is correct.
- The account has the permissions required in your environment.
- The remote computer is reachable.
- Your organization’s remote-management policy allows the query.
These are checks to investigate, not a guarantee that one change will resolve the failure. The required network and policy configuration can depend on the environment.
