Dark mode can feel more comfortable in a dim room, but it is not automatically easier to read or better for your eyes. Light mode may work better in bright surroundings and for some reading-heavy tasks. The useful choice depends on the room, the screen, the task, and your own comfort—not a promise that either theme prevents eyestrain.

What dark mode changes

Dark mode uses darker interface backgrounds with lighter text; light mode generally uses lighter backgrounds with darker text. The theme changes how the screen’s content appears, but it does not by itself fix glare, poor lighting, small text, or an uncomfortable viewing setup.

Pros and cons at a glance

Consideration Dark mode Light mode
Dim surroundings May feel more comfortable when a bright interface is distracting or uncomfortable. A bright page may feel glaring in a dim room, depending on screen brightness and the user.
Bright surroundings and reflections Light text on a dark background can be more affected by reflections. OSHA says dark characters on a light background are less affected by reflections than light characters on a dark background.
Reading and task legibility Some people find it comfortable, but it may make text harder to distinguish for a particular task. A 2026 literature synthesis found light mode performed better on readability and tasks requiring high lighting; results can vary by person and setting.
Eye comfort Can reduce overall screen brightness, but evidence that it reduces eyestrain is limited. May be more comfortable in bright conditions, though it is not a guaranteed fix for discomfort.
Accessibility Not inherently accessible; text and background still need sufficient contrast. Also requires sufficient contrast and other accessibility support.

The 2026 synthesis reviewed 25 selected scientific articles published from 2020 to 2025. Its findings are a summary of selected research, not a guarantee for every user; it notes that preferences vary with age, device, environment, and individual needs. Read the 2026 systematic literature study.

When dark mode is worth trying

  • You are in a dim environment and the bright interface feels uncomfortable.
  • You prefer its appearance and can still distinguish text and interface details clearly.
  • You can compare it with light mode using the same screen, text, and task.

Keep screen brightness appropriate to the room. If text becomes harder to read or important elements blend together, switch modes for that activity rather than forcing yourself to use one theme everywhere.

When light mode may work better

Try light mode in a bright room, when reflections make dark-mode text difficult to see, or when you are doing reading-intensive work. OSHA’s workstation guidance notes that reflected glare and excessive illumination can contribute to fatigue or headaches, and that dark characters on a light background are less affected by reflections than light characters on a dark background. Managing the lighting and reflections may help regardless of theme. OSHA workstation environment guidance.

Does dark mode actually help your eyes?

It may reduce overall screen brightness and improve screen contrast for some users, but that is not the same as proven eyestrain prevention. In a statement dated September 20, 2019, the College of Optometrists said there was little published evidence that night mode effectively reduces eyestrain. Its clinical adviser, Daniel Hardiman-McCartney, also said there was no evidence that screen use causes harm or damage to the eyes. Read the College of Optometrists’ statement.

Digital discomfort after prolonged screen use can have several contributors, including device overuse or misuse, lighting, glare, and viewing habits. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says blue light from computer screens has not been shown to harm eyes and blue-light glasses are not needed to improve sleep. It recommends reducing evening screen time and suggests setting devices to night or dark mode as practical guidance—not as proof that dark mode treats a sleep disorder. Other steps for screen comfort

The College of Optometrists recommends taking breaks, blinking regularly, using readable text size, and choosing a sensible viewing distance and position. Its 20-20-20 advice is to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. These are general screen-use recommendations, not effects of dark mode.

Why dark mode may be harder to read

People differ in how easily they distinguish light text on a dark background, and the result can change with screen glare, ambient light, device, and task. A dark theme can also have weak text/background contrast or use colors that make controls hard to identify. If the same content is clearer in light mode, use light mode for that task; there is no need to treat a theme preference as a test of eye health.

Is dark mode more accessible?

No theme is accessible by default. The U.S. Department of Justice says insufficient text/background contrast can prevent people with limited vision or color blindness from reading web content. A well-designed dark palette needs sufficient contrast just as a light palette does. Web designers should also avoid conveying information through color alone and support text enlargement or browser zoom. DOJ guidance on web accessibility and the ADA.

  3. Compare how quickly and comfortably you can read the text and distinguish controls, especially for the task you are doing.
  4. Use the theme that is clearer and more comfortable in that setting. Recheck when the room or task changes, and use different themes in different apps if needed.
