Other Android phones may use different menu names or paths.
Find total and per-app mobile data use
On a Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. The SIM screen displays total mobile data use. Tap App data usage to view usage over time and the amount attributed to each app.
If those labels are not on your phone, search Settings for “data usage” or consult your phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Menu paths vary across Android versions and manufacturers; Google advises users of customized Android versions to contact the device manufacturer if Pixel instructions do not work. Set a data warning or an automatic limit
On Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Data warning & limit. The warning and limit have different effects:

| Data warning | After you enable Set data warning and choose an amount, the phone notifies you when usage reaches it. Mobile data stays on. |
| Data limit | After you enable Set data limit and choose an amount, the phone turns off mobile data when that threshold is reached. Features that need cellular data may stop working. |
If the phone reaches the limit, it displays a notification. To restore mobile data, turn off Set data limit. Treat the limit as an on-device control, not a guarantee that your carrier will stop billing at precisely the same usage level.
Reduce mobile data use without losing what you need
Review background activity
Background data lets apps download information and provide notifications when you are not actively using them. You can restrict background data or use Data Saver to limit background access while allowing selected apps unrestricted access. The available controls vary by Android version and device. Restricting background activity can delay syncing, downloads, or notifications. Google outlines these controls in its mobile data guidance and Data Saver instructions.

Check roaming before you travel
Roaming settings can affect whether your phone connects to mobile networks away from your usual network. You may need roaming for connectivity in some places, but roaming can bring extra charges depending on your carrier and plan. Check your carrier’s terms before enabling it.
Turn off mobile data when appropriate
Turning off mobile data prevents cellular access, though Wi-Fi can still connect separately. This is a broad measure: apps that depend on a cellular connection will not have mobile data until you turn it back on.

Mark a limited Wi-Fi network as metered
On Android 12 and later, some devices let you mark a Wi-Fi network as metered so Android can manage downloads and app network use more cautiously. The documented setting may not appear on every device. See Google’s Android network and Data Saver guidance.
Understand why Android and your carrier may show different totals
Your phone’s Settings figure is a device measurement for monitoring. Google notes that some carriers measure usage differently and recommends checking the carrier’s measurements and plan limits. There is no established numerical accuracy comparison that makes one figure a universal substitute for the other. Use Android’s reading to spot patterns and high-usage apps; check your carrier account for plan and billing usage. Google Pixel Phone Help explains this distinction.

Check Google Play services or carrier plan details
Google Play services network use
Google Play services has a separate network data usage view. On Android 7 and later, Google says it can show the previous 14 days or a custom date range of up to 90 days. This is usage for Google Play services only, not total phone use or your carrier’s billing record. Details are in Google Play services network data usage help.
Carrier plan information and data offers
Some Android devices and carriers provide plan details or data-purchase offers at Settings > Google > Device plans. Availability depends on carrier and region; the carrier determines the available offers and prices. Google says the feature can show plan details such as quota and expiration date. It does not show personal name, payment information, internet use such as sites visited, or communication contents. See Google’s device plans help for availability and feature details.
