For a multi-system setup, RetroArch is a practical starting point, but it is a frontend—not a universal emulator. You choose an emulation core inside it. For Sega 8- and 16-bit systems, Libretro documents Genesis Plus GX as a dedicated core; Dolphin is the official project for GameCube and Wii emulation, and PCSX2 is the project for PlayStation 2.
This is a guide to options documented for a 2024 roundup, not a verified 2026 ranking. Project status, operating-system support, and compatibility can change, so check each project’s current official pages before installing.
What are the best console emulators for NES, SNES, Genesis, and more?
There is no evidence here for one definitive winner across every console. The right starting point depends on the system and whether you prefer one library interface or separate system-specific apps. The documented options below are project starting points, not a performance or compatibility ranking.
| System | Documented starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| NES and SNES | RetroArch with an appropriate core | RetroArch is a frontend that runs separate cores. The material available for this guide does not establish a current best-in-class core, compatibility percentage, or performance advantage for either system. See RetroArch’s platform information. |
| Genesis / Mega Drive and other Sega 8- and 16-bit systems | Genesis Plus GX, available as a Libretro core | Libretro documents support for Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega CD/Mega CD, Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000, and Pico software; it says 32X games are unsupported. These are the project’s compatibility claims, not independent test results. Read the Genesis Plus GX documentation. |
| GameCube and Wii | Dolphin | The official project identifies Dolphin with GameCube and Wii emulation on PC. Check its current download, requirements, and compatibility information for your device and game. Visit Dolphin’s official site. |
| PlayStation 2 | PCSX2 | The official PCSX2 site is the project starting point for PS2 emulation. The information reviewed here does not establish a compatibility rate or minimum PC specification. Visit PCSX2’s official site. |
For N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, later PlayStation systems, handhelds, or arcade games, this guide does not verify a current project chart. Check an emulator’s official documentation for the exact system, device, and software you intend to use rather than relying on an old ranking.

Should you use RetroArch or a standalone emulator?
RetroArch brings multiple emulator cores under one frontend, which can suit a library spanning several systems. It does not eliminate the need to pick the right core: the core supplies the system emulation, and core support and licensing can differ. Libretro’s core licensing documentation explains that licenses are not uniform across cores.
A standalone emulator is a system-specific alternative with its own workflow. Neither approach is established here as universally faster, more accurate, easier, or more compatible. Choose based on whether you value a unified library and settings or a dedicated app for a particular console.

What does Genesis Plus GX support?
Libretro describes Genesis Plus GX as an open-source Sega 8- and 16-bit emulator focused on accuracy and portability. Its documentation lists support for Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega/Mega CD, Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000, and Pico released software, and explicitly excludes 32X games. Those are the project’s stated capabilities, not independent verification.
The documentation also lists frontend features including saves, save states, rewind, netplay, controls, and remapping. Their availability in practice depends on the frontend and setup you use. The page’s “100% compatibility” wording is the project’s own claim for its stated system scope, not a third-party test result.

Do you need a BIOS file?
Sometimes. Firmware requirements depend on the system and game. Genesis Plus GX documentation says certain regional Sega CD games require the matching BIOS, while other listed boot ROMs are optional. Check the core’s documentation for the specific system and region rather than assuming every game needs firmware.
Keep three things distinct: the emulator program, a game image or dump, and console firmware. Each has separate sourcing and legal considerations. Do not assume that owning a cartridge or disc automatically makes every downloaded copy lawful. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction and circumstances; the U.S. Copyright Office’s general FAQ is not a ruling on a particular ROM, backup, or BIOS scenario. Check the law where you live, and do not obtain copyrighted firmware from unofficial download sites.

What you need before setting up an emulator
- The right app and core: If using RetroArch, identify both the frontend and the core for your system. For Genesis Plus GX, follow the core’s current Libretro setup documentation.
- Your game files: An emulator does not include the games. Make sure you understand the applicable rules for any image or dump you use.
- Firmware where required: Confirm requirements for the exact system, game, and region in the official documentation.
- Input setup: A USB game controller for PC is optional, not a prerequisite. Check the controller’s operating-system support and compatibility with your chosen emulator or frontend.
- Current device support: Check the official project’s download and requirements pages for your operating system before installing. The information here does not establish current minimum specifications for Dolphin or PCSX2.
