To add an existing Gmail account to Apple Mail, open Mail > Add Account, choose Google, and complete Google’s sign-in and permission prompts. Select Mail when asked which apps to use. Use Google sign-in rather than entering your Google password directly into a third-party mail setup.
Add Gmail to Apple Mail
- Open Mail and start account setup. In the menu bar, choose Mail > Add Account. If Mail is being set up for the first time, it may prompt you to add an account. You can also manage accounts through macOS Internet Accounts settings. Apple Support documents both account management and setup options; menu labels can vary by macOS version.
- Choose Google. Select Google from the provider list, then continue. If prompted to enter an email address first, enter the Gmail or Google Account address.
- Sign in with Google. Follow the Google sign-in window or browser prompts, including any requested verification. Review the access request and allow the connection.
- Enable Mail and finish. Select Mail among the services to use with the account, then finish setup. The account should appear in Apple Mail and in the Mac’s Internet Accounts settings. Google’s Apple Mail setup instructions for Workspace describe this provider-based sign-in flow.
Use Google sign-in, not a saved-password workaround
Google recommends the Sign in with Google flow when connecting Gmail to another mail app. It avoids giving a third-party app your Google username and password directly. Google says clients that request shared credentials are no longer supported. As Google puts it, “Instead, look for the option to ‘Sign in with Google,’ which is a safer way to sync your mail to other apps.” Google Gmail Help: Add Gmail to another email client.
If your Google account is already on the Mac, you may not need to add it again: open Mail > Accounts, select the account, and make sure Mail is enabled. The exact menu labels may differ across macOS releases.
Personal Gmail and Google Workspace have different policies
| Account type | Relevant policy | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Google Account | Beginning January 2025, Gmail IMAP is always enabled for personal accounts; there is no Enable/Disable IMAP switch to change. Existing client connections were not affected by this change. Google Gmail Help | Use the Google sign-in flow in Mail. No manual IMAP-enabling step is needed. |
| Google Workspace account | As of May 1, 2025, Workspace accounts no longer support third-party apps or devices that require Google username-and-password sign-in. An organization may also apply additional controls. Google Workspace Admin Help | Use Google sign-in. If your organization blocks the connection, contact your Workspace administrator. |
Fix common Gmail sign-in problems in Mail
Mail repeatedly asks for your password or rejects it
Update Apple Mail/macOS if an update is available, remove the stale account information, and add the account again by choosing Google and completing Google sign-in. If you recently changed your Google Account password, reconnect the account so Mail can authenticate again. Google recommends the sign-in flow rather than repeatedly supplying a password to the mail client. Google’s troubleshooting guidance.

Gmail reports too many simultaneous connections
Google says one Gmail account can be added to up to 15 email clients at a time; the accessed Google Help page does not state a year for this operational limit. Close or sign out of mail clients you no longer use, then try connecting again. Google Gmail Help.
You need to remove and re-add the account
Before removing an account, check for messages stored only on the Mac. Apple says removing an account removes its messages from the Mac, while server copies remain available. Copy or move any local-only messages you want to keep into an On My Mac mailbox first. Apple Support.
