Yes. Roblox requires an age check to use chat wherever chat is available. That requirement applies to chatting, not to playing Roblox altogether: people without an age check may still have limited game access, but they cannot chat. The verification methods, chat options, and parental-consent rules can vary by age and region.
What Roblox’s global rollout means
On January 7, 2026, Roblox announced that it was expanding its chat age-check requirement, first introduced in select regions in early December, to every region where chat is available. Roblox said users in those regions would receive prompts over the following week. “Global” therefore describes the rollout of the requirement where chat exists; it does not mean chat is available in every market.
The change is about access to communication features, not a universal requirement to prove your age just to play. Roblox’s current guidance says unchecked users cannot chat. Game access may also be limited during the transition to age-based accounts; the exact experience depends on region and account settings.
How to complete an age check
Roblox currently lists two ways to complete an age check. Which options appear can depend on the user’s age and regional requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Redemption: Online only. Robux cards can only be redeemed in a browser at Roblox.com/redeem. They cannot be redeemed in the Roblox mobile app or any video game console.

| Method | What it involves | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Facial age estimation | Follow the age-check flow in Roblox. Roblox says images and video used for estimation are deleted after processing. | Available through Roblox’s process, subject to regional requirements such as parental consent. |
| ID verification | Submit a government-issued photo ID through Roblox’s verification process. | Available to users aged 13 or older. |
Roblox identifies Persona as its facial age-estimation technology vendor. The company reported that the models had a Mean Absolute Error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18, based on testing by the U.K.’s Age Check Certification Scheme. That figure is reported by Roblox and is not an independent assessment in this article.
What happens after the age check
An age check does not open chat without limits. Roblox assigns users to age groups—including 5–8, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+—and uses age and other settings to shape who can communicate with whom. Roblox says users can generally chat within their own and neighboring age groups, but exact rules and features can differ by region and product.

- Age and region: Available chat features and age-based permissions vary.

- Trusted friends: A trusted-friend relationship can allow communication across age groups.
- Chat type: Experience Chat, Direct Chat, the Chat tab, and Voice Chat have distinct availability and controls. Voice Chat is regional.
Roblox’s later age-based account options, Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, add age-related content and parental settings. In its June 16, 2026 announcement, Roblox said users without an age check could be assigned an account based on self-declared age for limited game access, but still could not chat.
If the age estimate seems wrong
If Roblox’s estimate does not match the user’s age, the available correction route depends on the person’s age and circumstances. Users aged 13 or older may be able to use ID verification. Roblox also documents parent-linked correction options for children. Follow the options shown in the account’s age-check flow or Roblox Support guidance rather than submitting identity information through an unofficial service.

What parents can review
Parents can link their account to a child’s account and manage relevant parental controls. Before enabling communication, review the child’s age group, region, chat type, and account permissions. Roblox’s Safety FAQs address who a child can communicate with and how a parent can chat with their child; the answers depend on the feature and settings involved.
Age checks are one part of safety, not a guarantee that all unwanted interactions will be prevented. Roblox says it uses filtering, monitoring, and reporting, while acknowledging that no system can prevent all objectionable content. Parents should also talk with children about what to share, how to recognize uncomfortable interactions, and how to report or leave a conversation.

What Roblox reported about adoption
In a February 5, 2026 update, Roblox said 45% of its 144 million daily active users globally had completed an age check, based on checks completed as of the seven days ended January 31, 2026. Among age-checked daily active users, Roblox reported that 35% were younger than 13, 38% were ages 13–17, and 27% were 18 or older. Roblox cautioned that the age distribution could change as more people complete checks. These are company-reported figures, not an independent measure of the policy’s effectiveness.
