RTX owners are still posting reports about recent GeForce drivers, including black screens, display-signal loss and video-decode timeouts. Those reports are worth investigating, but they do not show how many users are affected or prove that the driver is the common cause.

The latest release identified in the available October 2026 snapshot is GeForce Game Ready Driver 617.42 WHQL, also listed as the October Studio Driver. The reports and release details below are a dated snapshot, not confirmation that every issue remains open today.

What the recent reports say—and what they do not prove

NVIDIA Developer Forums topic listings accessed October 8, 2026 include reports involving an RTX 5090 and Samsung Odyssey G95NC high-refresh HDMI black screens, signal loss at 5K/60Hz with DSC, and hardware video-decode TDRs in browsers and media applications. These are user reports, not confirmed defects or evidence that all RTX owners are affected. Forum posts can flag patterns to investigate, but they are not representative incidence data. The examples also differ in important ways: GPU, monitor, connection, display mode, application or workload, operating system, and driver version. Similar symptoms do not by themselves establish a shared bug. One current thread title compares behavior across driver versions; that, too, remains a user report unless NVIDIA confirms or fixes the issue.

What is known about GeForce driver 617.42

A community GeForce driver discussion posted October 6, 2026 identifies 617.42 WHQL as the latest Game Ready release and also lists it as the October Studio Driver. The thread says the Game Ready package targets support for several games, lists a fix for Assassin’s Creed Shadows crashing to desktop after extended gameplay on 616.56, and carries a report that “Prefer Maximum Performance” power management may not be applied correctly. Those release details are attributed to the discussion; check NVIDIA’s linked release notes for the official wording. The available snapshot cannot establish whether the reported power-management issue was later resolved or whether a newer driver appeared after October 6. 617.42 FAQ/Discussion

How NVIDIA’s earlier hotfix fits in

GeForce Hotfix Driver 616.86 is historical context, not the latest release identified here. NVIDIA Support says it was based on Game Ready Driver 616.64 and lists fixes for intermittent browser flicker, virtual displays failing to be created after 616.56, and Remote Desktop sessions showing a black screen after 616.56. NVIDIA describes hotfix drivers as beta, optional, provided as-is and run through a much-abbreviated QA process. Its guidance is: “The safest option is to wait for the next WHQL certified driver.” NVIDIA GeForce Hotfix Display Driver version 616.86

How to decide whether a report matches your problem

Before changing drivers, compare the reported setup and the conditions that trigger the symptom. Record:

  • Exact GPU model and whether it is a desktop or laptop system.
  • Operating system and version or build, plus the installed driver version.
  • Monitor model, connection type, resolution, refresh rate and whether DSC is in use.
  • The affected application or workload, and what the problem looks like.
  • Whether the issue is reproducible, when it began, and which troubleshooting steps you have tried.

This information helps distinguish a display-mode-specific signal problem from a browser flicker or video-decode timeout, and makes a report more useful to other users and support staff.

Where and how to report an issue

The October 2026 r/NVIDIA support megathread asks users to provide system type and hardware, GPU model and overclock status, operating system/version, installed driver version, whether installation was clean or an upgrade, problem details and troubleshooting already attempted. Its moderators caution that r/NVIDIA does not represent NVIDIA and point users to the official GeForce forum for complaints or issues they want NVIDIA staff to see. October 2026 support megathread

When posting, describe the symptom and exact conditions rather than concluding that a driver caused it. Include the version where it started, any version comparison you can reproduce, and the steps that reliably trigger or stop the problem.
