If your camera is missing, black, or unavailable in Microsoft Teams, first close other apps that might be using it, then select the right camera in Teams and check permissions. Next, test it in your device’s Camera app: if it works there, focus on Teams or browser settings; if it fails there too, check the camera’s privacy controls, connection, drivers, or device policy.
Try these quick fixes first
- Close other video apps. Quit other calling or recording apps that may be using the camera, then try Teams again.
- Reconnect an external camera. Unplug the webcam and reconnect it securely. If possible, try another USB port.
- Restart your device. This can release a camera that another process has left in use.
- Install available updates. Check for updates to Teams and your operating system.
- Choose the intended camera in Teams. A virtual camera or another connected device may be selected instead of the built-in or external camera.
These are Microsoft’s recommended initial checks for Teams camera problems. If the preview still fails, use the sections below to narrow down whether the cause is Teams, permissions, or the camera itself. Microsoft’s Teams camera troubleshooting guide
Check the selected camera and preview in Teams
In the Teams desktop app, open Settings > Devices. Under the camera setting, select the camera you want and check whether its preview appears. If the list shows a virtual camera or a different device, switch to the built-in or connected physical camera. Microsoft’s Teams device settings guide covers camera selection and video settings.
In supported desktop versions, you can also run a test call from Settings > Devices. It checks the microphone, speaker, and camera and provides a summary. The test call is not available in Teams on the web, and Microsoft currently documents it as English-only. About Teams test calls

Check camera permissions on Windows
Windows has more than one camera permission layer. Teams is a desktop app, so enabling camera access for apps alone may not be enough.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera, if those options are available.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera. Desktop apps are not listed with individual toggles in the same way as Microsoft Store apps.
- If you use Teams for work or school and see a Teams-specific toggle, check that it is enabled. Microsoft also advises turning it off and back on if it is already enabled, then closing apps and restarting the device.
If a setting is unavailable or marked as managed, your organization may control it. Ask your device administrator to check the policy rather than trying to bypass it. See Microsoft’s Windows camera permission instructions for Teams.

Check camera permissions on macOS
On macOS, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and make sure Microsoft Teams (work or school) is allowed. Then quit other apps that may be using the camera and restart the Mac. Microsoft labels these instructions for macOS 10.14 and later; menu names may differ on newer releases, so use the equivalent Camera privacy setting on your installed version. Allow camera access in Teams on the web
Browser-based Teams needs permission at the browser and site level. In the browser’s privacy or site settings, allow the Teams site to use the camera and choose the correct camera if more than one is available. Then refresh the Teams page. Microsoft provides browser-specific steps for Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox in its Teams on the web device troubleshooting guide.

If the problem affects an app used inside Teams on the web, check Teams app permissions as well as the browser’s camera permission. Some permissions can be managed by your organization’s IT administrator.
Use your device’s Camera app to isolate the cause

- The camera works in the system app, but not in Teams: return to Teams’ camera selection and check the app’s permissions. For browser Teams, also check site permission and refresh the page.
- The camera fails in the system app too: look for a physical shutter or keyboard privacy key, check any manufacturer privacy setting, and reconnect an external webcam. On Windows, check whether the camera appears in Device Manager, look for available drivers or updates, and run the camera troubleshooter. Security software or administrator policy may also restrict access.
Microsoft lists connections, drivers, security software, and organization settings among possible causes when a camera is unavailable. If the device is managed, ask the administrator to review access; if the camera is not detected or appears faulty, consult the manufacturer. Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting guide

When replacing the camera makes sense
An external USB webcam may be a useful fallback if the built-in camera is faulty or you need a separate camera. It is not the first fix for a Teams selection mistake, a blocked browser permission, or an operating-system setting. Before buying one, test the existing camera in the system Camera app and confirm that the replacement is compatible with your device.
