RCS is a provider-supported messaging standard that brings features such as typing indicators, read receipts, and higher-resolution media to conversations across supported devices. iMessage is Apple’s messaging service for Apple devices. On an iPhone, iMessage messages appear in blue bubbles; RCS messages appear in green, as do SMS and MMS messages. The key differences are reach, feature support, and whether a particular conversation is end-to-end encrypted.
What is RCS messaging?
Rich Communication Services (RCS) is an industry-standard messaging service delivered through participating mobile providers or other RCS providers. When the devices, messaging apps, and services involved support it, RCS can use Wi-Fi or mobile data and offer features beyond traditional SMS and MMS. It is not one single app, and its availability and features depend on the participants’ setup.
RCS can enable high-resolution photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts, and group messaging features. Google Messages is one app that supports RCS; Apple Messages also supports RCS on eligible iPhones. For an overview of the service and its security, see Google Messages’ explanation of RCS security.

How do RCS and iMessage differ in everyday use?
Reach and interoperability
RCS is intended to work across supported platforms and providers, so an Android user and an iPhone user may be able to use it in the same conversation. That does not mean every phone or carrier supports RCS. iMessage works as iMessage between Apple devices; when a participant is outside iMessage, Apple Messages may use another supported method, such as RCS or SMS/MMS.
Features and bubble colors
Both services can provide a more interactive experience than SMS/MMS, including read receipts and typing indicators. RCS feature availability varies by app and provider. Apple’s Messages app also offers Apple-specific features such as editing and unsending messages, scheduling, and collaboration tools.

On iPhone, blue means iMessage, while green means the message is using RCS, SMS, or MMS. Green alone does not tell you which of those three transports is in use. If the distinction matters, check the conversation or compose label in Messages.
Are RCS messages encrypted like iMessage?
No blanket answer applies to every RCS conversation. Apple says iMessage messages are end-to-end encrypted. For RCS, encryption depends on the platform, app, providers, and participants in the specific conversation.

RCS between Google Messages users
Google says eligible one-to-one and group RCS conversations are end-to-end encrypted when participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled. A lock icon appears in the compose/send area and conversation when end-to-end encryption is active. Google’s security documentation says Google Messages can use TLS when end-to-end encryption is unavailable; TLS protects data in transit between the user and Google, but it is not the same as end-to-end encryption between conversation participants.
RCS between iPhone and Android users
Google’s RCS FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted in the circumstances it describes. Apple’s current support information says iPhone end-to-end encrypted RCS is available starting with iOS 26.5 through supporting providers, and every participant’s provider must support encryption. Apple says an encrypted Messages conversation displays “Encrypted” with a lock icon. If that indicator is absent, Apple says the messages are not protected from a third party reading them while they are sent between devices.

Because support is conditional and differs by platform and provider, check for the encryption indicator in the particular conversation rather than assuming that RCS is encrypted. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. See Google’s instructions for identifying end-to-end encrypted conversations and its RCS security explanation.

End-to-end encrypted RCS has a higher threshold: Apple specifies iOS 26.5 and a provider that supports end-to-end encryption, with support required from every participant’s provider. Having RCS enabled does not, by itself, establish that a conversation is encrypted.
What happens if RCS or data service is unavailable?
RCS uses mobile data or Wi-Fi. Google says mobile-data use is charged according to the user’s data plan; using Wi-Fi that does not incur a charge has no additional messaging cost under that condition. Apple also notes that cellular data rates may apply to iMessage messages sent over cellular data.
Google Messages can offer the option to switch an undelivered RCS message to carrier SMS/MMS. A message may also use SMS/MMS if service or eligibility changes. The exact fallback behavior, controls, and charges depend on the app, device, provider, and plan, so do not assume a setting or billing outcome is identical across phones and carriers.
Which should you use?
Choose based on the people you message, their devices and providers, and your privacy needs. iMessage is a straightforward choice for Apple-to-Apple conversations where its features and end-to-end encryption are available. RCS can provide richer cross-platform messaging when all the necessary device, app, and provider support is in place. For sensitive conversations, verify the lock or “Encrypted” indicator in the actual chat; a green bubble is not proof of either encryption or its absence.
