Proton Docs is a collaborative document editor built into Proton Drive. Proton launched it on July 3, 2024, describing real-time editing, comments, photo insertion, and end-to-end encryption. Today, Proton also advertises suggested edits, threaded comments, external collaboration, mobile access, and controls to revoke sharing access. Its privacy and feature statements are Proton’s claims, not independent verification of every Docs-specific security detail.
What Proton launched in 2024
On July 3, 2024, Proton announced Docs as an end-to-end encrypted editor inside Proton Drive. The launch announcement described real-time collaborative editing, comments, adding photos, and encrypted keystrokes and cursor movements. Proton said the initial rollout would begin that day and reach all users over the next couple of days; that was the launch schedule, not a statement about current availability. Proton’s launch announcement also said Docs was developed jointly with the Standard Notes team.
At launch, Proton said users could upload .docx documents and download files as .docx, .txt, .md, or HTML. These are the formats specified in the announcement; it does not establish whether the list has changed since then.
What Proton says Docs can do now
Proton’s current product page advertises features beyond the initial launch description. These are current vendor claims, rather than independently tested observations. Proton’s Docs page lists:

- Permission management, including the ability to revoke access.
Proton’s 2024 recap says Docs added suggested edits and iOS and Android app availability during that year. The recap also called Docs the only end-to-end encrypted online editor with suggested edits at the time. That was Proton’s comparative claim in 2024, not a verified statement of current market exclusivity. Proton’s 2024 Drive recap does not provide a current, comprehensive comparison of competing editors.
Is Proton Docs private?
Proton says Docs uses end-to-end encryption so that only the user and chosen collaborators can read document content. Its launch announcement also says Proton cannot access metadata such as document file names. Those are Proton’s descriptions of its product; they should not be treated as independent proof of the security of a particular document or account. Proton’s Drive security page describes end-to-end and zero-access encryption, open-source code, and independent audits of Proton Drive. The reviewed material does not establish the scope or findings of an audit specific to Docs.

Proton’s security page identifies Switzerland as the company’s legal base and discusses Swiss privacy protections. A company’s stated jurisdiction and encryption model do not amount to a blanket guarantee against every form of government access, nor do they establish that a particular user’s data handling complies with a law or regulation. For legal or compliance decisions, assess the requirements that apply to your organization and consult appropriate advice.
How to share a Proton Doc
Proton’s current product page describes two ways to work with outside collaborators: invite them by email or share a secure link. It says users can choose viewing or editing access and revoke access later. People without Proton accounts can collaborate, according to Proton. The current Docs page is the source for these advertised options; it does not specify every screen or step in the sharing interface.

Proton’s June 2024 Drive sharing announcement also described email sharing, viewer and editor permissions, and revocation. It said those sharing features were then available on web and Android; that platform detail describes the launch-era sharing update, not today’s platform coverage. - Devices and ecosystem: Consider access across desktop, tablet, and mobile, as well as how closely the editor fits your cloud storage and broader productivity tools.
